How do you trim it to size? I got a replacement which is way too long, so I rough-cut it with side cutters. The material deformed and went cloudy. There is still room to cut more off to fit the front sight exactly, so how do you cut it?

I always use sidecutters.

Now I have never had to do this for gun sights but . . In the IT field I have seen cables made up with a razor and then the ends are polished with a little abrasive puck and some polishing fluid. If you can find the polishing puck I imagine that would solve your issue but I would think side-cutters would give you a beveled cut on the end as they do on copper wire.
