Not sure this fits in the "gunsmithing" section, but since I read a few threads about this topic here I am taking a chance and posting it here. If the mods beat me in a corner, I apologize in advance

I got from another CGN member a sweet deal on a SKS fiberglass jungle stock, and I want to paint it to desert tan. I have little knowledge of how to prep the surface. The fiberglass has a bit of cosmo/oil or whatever that stinky stuff is that the chinese paste on their SKSs, so can I use varsol/mineral spirits/thinner to get this off without killing the stock itself?

Then I can lighty sand it with (220grit?) and then go to primer?

Before I prime it I want to fill a seam that runs along the back of the stock, since it looks like two pieces of fiberglass glued together. What kind of filler can I put in the crack before I prime?

The paint and matte I can finish with, its the before part that needs detail

degrease with solvent then wash with soap and hot water. the seam can be filled with any quality bodyfiller. clean up any imperfections with filler. sand the filler with #100 grit followed with #220 and#320. primer and sand with #320 untill smooth, final sand with #400 and paint away.

Good tips, thanks.

Fiberglass is not afraid of solvents or water? Obviously not soaking them, but I cannot damage the surface or the threads with mineral spirits and hot water?

just a wipedown with solvent, one wet rag and one to dry. hot soapy water will ensure any mold release is removed and will not affec the fiberglass.
