I have some tritium night sights on my 1911 right now, and they are just not jumping out at me when I am doing rapid shooting in moderate to bright light. I am beginning to get into IDPA, so that is an issue.

What brand of fiber optics do you use (no internet sages please, just stuff you use or have used)?

What set up (which colours where)?

Would you recommend them? After all, I am looking for things to avoid too. I will be drawing from a holster regularly so durability will be an issue.

If you can throw in where you got them or where they are available that would be a bonus.

Thanks!

I am curious of the exact same thing. I would like a front site for a Kimber. I have only found them in sets for $120+

OP- what gun are you looking at them for? sig pic?

Yup, sig pic. I was looking at the tru glows, but I hear they can be difficult with holsters and have a habit of breaking (and possibility backed up by them only having a 90 day warranty). I don't know anyone with actual experience with them though.

I do not use them with holsters but I have mostly HiVIZ sights on most of my guns. They make an overmoulded one that I would think would be very durable. They can ne bought from Brownells and they ship to Canada. If you need more info then this send me a PM and I will do all I can to help you out with this problem. Oh yeah they work great as well.

I prefer the Heinie Glock sight on the rear and the Dawson red FO front sight. Fairly durable and makes a huge difference.

My buddy has Warren Sevigny competition sights on his Glock, also very good.

I got a Dawson front sight for my Kimber and it has stood up pretty well. I measured the factory front sight and ordered the right height so that i wouldnt have to replace the rear and it's bang on for my loads. I'm a little undecided if I actually like it over just a straight black front sight. Depending on the light I find it either a help or a hinderence. Under the wrong light the front becomes a bit vague.

I have Tru Glo Tritium Fibre Optic sights on my Kimber, Glock and M&P. Great for both bright and low light. (green front and yellow rear - for contrast in low light)

I shoot IPSC and had Bruce Gray upgrade my SIG X-Five. He installed a Dawson fibre optic the width of which allows more daylight in the notch of the RS. The logic is that the Dawson pops into view quickly and the eye more or less centres it. This works well for me.

Another vote for Hi-Viz they make a very good sight. I prefer green over red but others go red over green. Pick one. I got mine through Brownells as well.

Do the fiber optic front sights break when using a holster ? I never really thought about it but I am going to buy a CZ shadow in the new year.

I have never seen a FO sight break due to holster use (Kydex) but I certainly have seen them break on port openings and where shooters are shooting under or beside walls so it can happen. Most FO sights allow for easy tube replacement. It only takes a second. Some are designed that are nonreplaceable but are significantly more reobust. IN the last five yeras I have broken one tube and can't remember how or where it happended. I just noticed while cleaning the gun. During the competition I hadn't noticed the tube was missing.

I will be using my G34 with Tru Glos tonight at IDPA. I will let you try it if you like. The Tru Glos are steel and the fiber is protected well. Holster hasn't bothered them yet. Dawson fiber sights are awesome as well. I love my Tru Glos. Red front and green rear. I have posted this on another thread but when I took my IPSC black badge the instructor was a grand master and the fastest shot I have ever witnessed. We did a match after the black badge course and when he shot it sounded like his gun was in full auto but he was still hitting all A zones. I wouldn't believe it if I saw it on youtube but I saw it in person. He was in production division so he wasn't using a race gun. Just a CZ with Dawson fiber optics. He used red front and green rear. I find especially with the yellow lense shooting glasses that this combo of fiber colours is awesome for fast target aquisition.

Dawson Precision are the BEST. They offer very strong sights and thinner frame so it won"t fill up the whole rear sight area.

This will come in handy if you shoot small targets or at 30-50 Meters. Not to mention, the fibers they use are incredible well made and bright. I use them on my Glock production gun for IPSC and love it.

I personally find a single red fiber and adjustable black target rear a better choice over dual color. It allows me to focus on the red dot and acquire it faster.

Ideal front sight would have to let you have 'light bars' or 'gaps' on either side of the sight at 50% of the sight width. It greatly depends on your arms' lengh too; so, it's VERY personal.

I am curently deciding between doing a Dawson .100 red front post and a plain novak wide notch rear; or tru glow green in back and red in front. Either way, I have been unable to find dealers.

Anyone know who sells dawson or truglo in Canada? It would be greatly appreciated!

I have plain black in the rear and red Dawson up front as you describe. It works well. I also have another SIG with green up front. To my eye green is the brightest and that's what I would prefer up front if you can get it. You want the rear to be dimmer. Many combos use yellow in back as for many yellow is less bright. The narrow Dawson up front is a good idea and is fast to acquire.

You might try Ellwood Epps to see if they would order for you.

I got some Truglo TFOs off the EE last week.
Got to try them today at the Brantford Hangover Match.
They are so much better than the stock tritium sights.

TruGlo

I have a TruGlo on one of my SIG's. It's a good combination of technologies and reasonably bright in most conditions. My FS is green which I prefer over red.
