I'm a guy who's got the hunger. I love deer meat and the only time I get it is when someone gives it to me. So I almost have my PAL. In the meantime I have been watching various youtube vids on how to skin animals.

I have to ask how do you do up a deer? I really would rather now have anything to do with the anus and crap my dad says that there are other ways be he has not hunted in 30 years. So what do you do? what are the options?

There's an orange, plastic tool called the butt-out (I think) that works well for avoiding the nasty bits when gutting deer. You insert the tool, cut around the anus carefully and tie it to the tool with a small string. Then pull the tool and anus out together--- very slick, but once you get good at gutting it's never usually a problem anyway. You just need a mentor in your area to show you the ropes.

I won't have a problem doing it, but well two girls 1 cup is still kind of fresh.

just my humble opinion but the butt-out tool i think is useless.there are alot of different ways to gut and skin a deer, but i recently got a set of videos by outdoor edge(the knife maker so there is some advertisements too) that i thought were absolutely great. They show how to field dress, de-bone large game in field, caping etc. Although slightly different from the way i was taught, i'll be giving those techniques a try this fall. The set of dvd's also included 1 on sausage making, 1 on jerky making, and a 5 hour hunt disc. Really a great set and i think i'll be getting one of those knives this year too!

Forget the special tools, all you need is a good medium sized knife with a bit of a curve on it. If it takes more than 5 minutes to gut it and have it in the truck, you're not doing it right.

If you're concerned about ruining some good deer meat (this is if you have no one to mentor you) you can buy yourself a live pig for next to nothing, wack it, and then practise up field dressing on it. There are TONS of videos out there...just type field dressing deer into youtube and you have enough to last you a lifetime. Might also want to search the gutless method, which is a great way to do things for smaller animals and you also get to avoid the guts and other dirty bits. Not sure why you'd be afraid of the anus though..it's not as though it's full of big ole greasy logs or anything, it's just a part of the animals anatomy...just wash your hands after. Or do you have an anal fetis....err phobia?

Pretty simple process that is difficult to explain...Get the insides outside! :D

Think fish only be careful not to cut into the gut.

There is a bunch of clips on Youtube and every one I saw was full of epic noobs trying to show you how to do the job.
Same applies here, but you can get an idea how to do the job.

After you do it once it is a no brainer.

I have done it like everyone else for 25yrs, and 2 yrs ago I bought that orange "ButtOut" tool" just as a joke, and let me tell ya the boyz were laughing when they saw me pull this tool out.

Now after trying the tool for two deer seasons, no one laughs any more because simply put, IT WORKS.

Pruuner kind of got the instruction correct, except there is no cutting involved. You just shove it up inside, turn it, and pull. The anus detatches and pulls out, then you can tie it off and remove the tool.

Its a simple tool that works.

A mentor to talk you through the first couple would be ideal, but don't sweat it RAI, just take your time and don't cut yourself.
The anus has been mentioned, you have to cut the diaphram away from the ribcage all the way around, then feel up along the top of the chest cavity until you find the windpipe and sever it. Then everything come's out. Make sure to not bugger up your tenderloins when gutting.
It's easier if you have someone to hold the back legs, or can tie them so they're out of your way.

Just take your time and you'll do fine. It's more mental than anything, there's really not much to it and it's a lot cleaner than you think.

Hi - glad you're interested. Look at all the diagrams and all the various instructions articles in the various hunting rags - there will be more this fall again I'm sure, but I suspect they are archived at the web sites of Ontario Outdoors and Field and Stream and such.

My cousin swears by the but-out tool. He has done many deer the 'just grab it, pull it out as much as you can and cut around way', and he's converted. I just don't want to carry one more thing is all.

I gutted my first deer, without a mentor, and it took about two hours. So ignore the smart-asses who somehow think it has to be done faster. It will get very easy once you know the anatomy, but it'll take a couple of animals before that, no matter how many neat little diagrams you pour over.

cgn probably needs a how to gut a deer sticky...

Its best to learn from someone who can do it properly, although many don't in my opinion, then do it yourself while its still fresh in your mind. In Alberta, we get 1 buck tag and 2 doe tags. Lots of room for practice and learning.

The butt plug thingy might help extract the #######, but there is still lots of fat and other tissue that needs to be removed from the area. You gonna get your hands dirty anyway so just have a medium knife and a pack of baby wipes in your field kit. The more you do it, the less messy you get. It should be still warm when you dress it and once the skin on the ass is cut, you can push and cut through the fat to the other side of the pelvis on all sides with your hand. There is no clean way to do it. Five minutes tops, skin it once its hung.

how hard is it , really ???

just keep cutting stuff away till all the guts are removed , do it enough times and you get good at it , and know what not to cut later .

if the smell is a problem , get some " dust masks " the white filter type the fit over your mouth and nose .... with some animals you might need to use 2 filters :D

what i also do , when i get it home , and the hide off , i take a stiff nylon brush and a garden hose and scrub everything down really good ( where the guts used to be , and the outside only if the hide was removed in the bush ) .

this will greatly improve on the quality of the finished product later on .

then pat everything dry with paper towel , and set several fans around the hanging meat so it quickly gets a " skin " on the outside of it again ( washing it will removed the skin that had already formed ) .

It's not so bad even if you have to give er a go by yourself....watch a few videos on youtube and peek at a few books. Take your time and if it takes an hour, oh well. As long as you don't puncture the poop shute/guts/get piss all over it will be good in the end.

I was worried about the smell on my first deer so I used a liberal dose of menthol vapor rub(??) on my nose and top lip. On deer #2 I was breathing the steam coming off the guts to be a comedian in front of my girlfriend.:)

Get a folding sport saw and disposable nylon gloves.
Split brisket and take out ridge in pelvic bone (cut either side of ridge).
Cut around windpipe, grab windpipe and pull to rear. Cut through diaphragm and anything else that entrails hang up on. When entrails are all out, cut around anus from inside hide.

Dry hands, no anus handling. Takes a few minutes longer.

A couple of other ideas on "accessories" to make the job a bit more comfortable. I don't like blood freezing on my hands in cold weather, so I use a pair of large elbow length heavy rubber gauntlets and put on a pair of gardening gloves first. That way you can dive right in and stay clean and comfortable in the process. Also, carry a 2-5 gallon ctnr of water in your truck for clean-up and a rinse of the body cavity, even if snow is available.
