Went out today to scout some spots to take a friend who is coming up tomorrow with his Brittany pointer, and took the little .410 along just in case.

Coming back, saw a big Ruffy on the side of the path, and when I got closer there were 6 or 7 more among the grass and debris.

Sluiced three for dinner with the break-open, exposed hammer .410 single, which I bought on a whim from Reliable Gun, and it actually shoots quite well for a cheap beater gun. Right on at 25 yds.

About 150 bucks brand new, not a bad investment. It's a lot like the short backpacker gun, but with a 22" (?) vent rib barrel.

I guess I'm going to have to add some pics later.
Saw three deer, one moose, one fox, and two different guys loading a deer into their pickups during the afternoon.

Tomorrow we'll do it for real, over the dog, and the 20g will come out to play. Maybe more to report .....

I do.
I plan on taking it up as a grouse/bk-up piece.
they're nice.

will post report after actually using it hunting. Range reports count as nothing when that's all.
Trigger is a little stiff, but not excessive.

Does anyone own the "Backpacker"? It looks like a really neat .410!

Jeff/1911.

Scott brought one up to Haggisfest, and I shot his up at Squamish before as well.

I can't hit a dam thing with it. :?

It's like a big pistol with a stock on it. The model I have is just like it, but has a long vent rib barrel which makes it easier to sight with.

I suppose you can get better with a lot of practice... Scott actually hit a few clays with it at the trap range....!

Thanks for the feedback about the "Backpacker" guys (and thanks for the picture - Popcan)...it does look neat. I realize however, that a single shot with a conventional length barrel isn't exactly "unwieldy", now is it? There are lots of used .410 single shots for sale at around the $125 mark - perhaps this would be a better way to go.

Jeff.

I paid under 150 bucks new for mine, on a whim, and I was actually suprised at how it well it shoots. So far I have fired a grand total of 5 rounds with it: two sighting rounds and three grouse later, it's a keeper for tossing into the truck.

Next we can start a .410 slug bear defence thread! I dare you!

Picked up a backpacker, mint condition for $115. Fun little gun, hope to use for grouse. Easily fits in the rear "seat" on the ATV. Would ne neat if there was a holster or scabbard or some sort of an attachment for a back pack available that would fit. Would look kinda dorky with a sling.
You mean that the slugs I got for it aren't any good for bears ???

I managed to handle a few different single shot .410 shotguns yesterday...still trying to decide which one I like best. One of these was the IGA that you spoke of popcan - the IGA model with the vent rib along the barrel. I find that rib really does guide my eye to the point of aim quickly. This could be "the one" for me. :)

Well, I went ahead and bought a Stoeger "Backpacker" .410 today. :D My local shop got some in and at $159, brand new...I just couldn't resist! I'll be out Friday trying it out - I'll write back with my findings. It sure is cute!

NOOOOOOOO! Not the backpacker!

I'm sure you'll have fun with it!

Hi popcan,

Yeah, I couldn't resist it seems. It's not my only .410 though...I also own a Steven's bolt action four-ten that I was amazed to find I could dust quite a few clay pigeons with the last time out with my buddies!

The Backpacker is just for fun, I think! :p

I'll write back tomorrow after I've had a chance to try her out!

Jeff.

The field repot just happened.
I mean the real one. not at range, but in the field
got 5 grouse with it.
@25 m is deadly. , @40 is not so sure, but workable

158 cout on #6 pellets.

Very loud though. Still hear funny with my left ear.

No bears to try it on. Unfortunately. :?

question-if you wanted a relatively light shotgun-why wouldn't you choose a 20 guage?Aren't the shells a lot cheaper and if you wanted a slug, more effective, just in case you ran into a deer?
