Question - Does the alternate method shown on YouTube videos only work on the M&P models with the magazine disconnect safety?
This is the method described where you don't need to use a tool to trip the action. I just got mine and have only used the prescribed method in the user manual.
Thanks,
Glen

I have a M&P 45 in FDE and have never used the tool. I think if you keep taking it out and putting it back in, you will eventually erode the holder in goes into and the friction won't be enough to hold it in place.

I just lock the slide back, turn my take down lever down, release the slide, and pull the trigger (like an XD). The slide then comes right off. Been doing that for 2 years after every shoot (I clean it after each one) every week, and see no reason to stop doing it.

I don't know what I am doing wrong then. Gun is brand new, maybe that's part of it. Yet to fire a shot out of it while I await ATT.
I can break it down using the tool okay, but it will not release the slide using the alternate method. I have tried it with the mag in and out with no luck.
Maybe after a few hundred rounds it will loosen things up.
Thanks for the info folks,
Glen

are you pulling the trigger? all that lever that you move with the tool does is lock the striker and make it so you dont have to pull the trigger when field stripping

Just figured out what I was doing wrong:bangHead:
I did not lock the slide back properly with the mag out! The slide lock was not being pushed up. I had used it as the release and not the lock:rolleyes:
Once I did it right = presto!! D'oh!!!
Thanks for the help again,
Glen

Thanks for posting on this subject!

I just got an M&P40 a few days ago and I couldn't see how it would be beneficial to keep using the tool. Not being familiar with this type of pistol I didn't realize there was a way around it.

I do have one question....

One of the first steps when using the "tool" is to lower the sear deactivation lever. Needless to say, my fingers won't reach the lever (I'd have to grow a Coke Nail...). Is there an issue with the sear being active when depressing the trigger for dis-assembly?

ive been using an M&P40 for over two years and have not heard of this method. Ive used an unclicked clicky pen to move the lever down and disassemble the pistol that way. Ill try this tomorrow.

With the magazine disconnect safety in place you cannot do the "alternate method" and just pull the trigger to remove the slide, as the trigger will not function with the magazine removed...

Found that out the hard way, and really hated the magazine disconnect, so I just took it out. Super easy to do as well. If you google it you can find some youtube videos on how to do it.

Basically you remove the roll pin holding the sear block in place, float out the forward pin that holds the yellow sear disconnect and the mag disconnect, take the mag disconnect and the spring off and replace it with a longer spring to take up the room you just created. I used a spring out of a retractable pen and trimmed it a bit with a pair of pliers. Works fantastic. Re-assemble and presto.

I cannot get mine to strip down without pushing the little lever inside down. I tried doing it the other way, but when I pull the trigger the slide still won't come off. Am I doing something wrong. I lock the slide back flip the takedown lever down release the slide and pull the trigger and it still won't come off.

Use a plastic pen to trip the sear lever.

Yup, already have an empty pen tube in my toolbag for such instances.

Is the takedown lever possibly flicking back up half-way when you bring the slide forward? This happened to me a few times.

If you have a magazine disconnect in your M&P you cannot do the pull the trigger slide removal method. You'll either have to remove the mag disconnect like I did or continue using your pen lid ;)

Mitchzilla - with the mag removed you pull the slide back to its rearward position, then move the slide lock switch up into the notch. Then turn the slide release button down. Pull back on slide and pull trigger as you ease the slide forward. Here is the video I used as a reference. It shows the factory way and the alternate method.

Note that in the alternate part of the video the guy does not really show how he locked the slide open. That's where I couldn't figure where I went wrong. As he turns the gun around you see the slide lock in the up position. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Glen

:agree: magazine disconnect does not allow for this technique. That being said, any object can be used the flip the lever down. Pen, paper clip, staple out of a target, small pocket knife etc……

Or take it out. Unless your an LEO type who might benefit from it in a weapon retention struggle you can just take out the mag disconnect and then use the alternate takedown method all you want. It's super easy and all you need is a 1/8" roll pin punch, a hammer, and a spring from a retractable pen.

If you google it there's a couple of videos on YouTube. It's also in the M&P armorers manual. If people are interested I can make a quick video on how I did mine and what spring I used, post it in the forum in the morning??

Interest??

I got my M&P40 on order from SFRC-hopefully I'll get it in a week and half.
