fill for front rest bag?

hi all,

I had a local leather shop make me a front rest bag for my Sinclair competition br front rest.
he contacted me today.
he want to know what media to use.
this rest will be completely sewed shut, so I will not be able to fill or empty.
any suggestions of what I can use?

it will be complete leather.

I used sandblasting media from Canadian Tire. It was $10-12 for a 1kg container & I bought 2 for my rear bag (had about 1/3 of a container left over). It's really dense and packs up nice & firm once settled.

For weight Zircon sand is almost 2x heavier than regular silica sand, Chromite sand is a little less dense but easier to find and cheaper.
Riverbed sand from a pet store is about 50% heavier than the standard play sand.

Lead shot is too heavy and doesn't form well.

Rice/barley/wheat/beans are crap when they get wet or infested.

For less serious use I use airsoft ammo: light, durable and it doesn't leak as easily as sand.

The idea of a sealed bag may be detrimental in the long run.
What ever your fill is it will shift/settle and break down, this will require adding fill.
If you get to much in then it can be harder than you will want, which can create vertical in your groups.

For a rear bag I use crushed walnut shells, light and hold up well. Fine to get wet as long as you let it dry out.

I would never seal a bag. It's important to be able to add as well as remove

I use the plastic pellets used for stuffing dolls.
It's available at Michael's craft store.
It's much heavier than the cork bag filler.
It also has the special ability to find a slightly open zipper and escape into a shooting bag.

I'd use sand, either silica or zircon, it will settle over time, Ideally I think it should have an opening so you could add more when required.

I never liked sand as it usually leaked out. I found glass shot is hard on the inside of the bags. I have been using fish tank rocks from walmart. They are impervious to water and they are painted so they non abrasive. Their odd shape lets them pack together good, they don't leak out and they are cheap. I found this chart online.

I would think that they may be too light and not pack down well enough compared to sand, You may not be able to get a good steady rest with the beads.

Number 9 lead shot in a mix with fine sand works well. Again I would have the bag with the small opening to fill or empty.
