Filling holes in 1895 receiver?

Definitely just gonna go for the Lyman 21 for now. Dropped the rifle off at a gunsmith yesterday to have the headspace checked. Did a little more digging around and found out that only a fraction of 1895s with the pistol grip were non deluxe models, which would seem to be the case for this particular rifle. I don’t have an exact number for flatside pistol grip .303 rifle production but I don’t think there are very many out there, so I’m not going to be risking repairing the holes in the receiver for the time being, there isn’t much point if the holes will be covered up anyhow!

A suggestion if holes are to be plugged. Don't countersink. If you do, the filler screw will have a sharp feathered edge when it fills the hole. Instead, counterbore the hole slightly. Then the filler plug edge will be at 90 degrees to the surface; no sharp edge.

To fill holes, it is my preference to use a tight fitting plug, rather than a screw. If one wants to thread, then a fillister head screw can be used. Leave the head proud then peen it down and file and polish.

Howdy all, picked up a Winchester 1895 deluxe flatside the other day. Someone along this rifles past decided to drill and tap the receiver for what I would assume was a side mounted scope. What are my options for filling these holes permanently? I plan on restoring the gun so i can have a nice 1895 flatside which can be shot without shame or concern to value.

What are my options here? Filling the holes with screws and cutting/filing them down until they’re flush? Maybe welding them in?

These flatside deluxes are pretty rare and I’d like the finished product to look as nice as possible.

here’s a picture!

The holes should be either 6-48 or 8-40. Visit a local gun shop or gunsmith and I bet they have a drawer full of filler/plug screws, and would likely give you a couple for free. If not, they can be ordered easily. You might have to chase the threads out a bit or dress the edges of the plug screws, but it would prevent any further damage from being done.
