When working with a fiberglass stock is there anything wrong with filling in the gap in the barrel channel with short strand fiberglass body filler?

I wouldnt think of using it where is is going to take abuse but its basically just a cosmetic thing in the barrel channel, plus the short strand stuff is still pretty strong.

Or would it be better to just do the whole thing in marine-tex? fiber glass is cheaper thought!!!!

Auto body filler works fine for that job and is lighter weight than most bedding compounds. See if you can get some sections of broken graphite fishing rods. Cut them to the length of the void you are filling and set them in and cover with the filler. The graphites sections are light and also add rigidity to the forened when enclosed in compound.

A solid resin mass won't "go off" at a consistent rate and you are likely to get stress cracks. The fibre will help bind the resin to itself. Short, long, fluff, fibre or chop, it all works when filling. A friend of mine built a 29' canoe hulled yawl (for any sailors in the crowd it is an L. Francis Herschoff designed Rosinante). He gave me a paper bag filled with micro balloons. It is like flour in gravy, or light beer and a long football game. Tastes great, less filling.
