Final answer? .308/7.62x51mm in norc m14s

All advice is not to necksize for a semi-auto and I've adhered to that with thousands of reloads over the yrs.If you are going to necksize I would suggest that you trial chamber every one of your necksized cases before re-loading and firing them. This is a check to ensure that the case will freely and fully chamber due to the possibility of the case shoulder not being setback by the neck resizing process and also as a check that the radial dimension of the case is not too "fat" to fully chamber.Remember that a semi-auto bolt does not have the same camming power of a bolt gun to chamber an oversize case.Do this check with the bolt stripped and the op rod spring removed. Why do I suggest this? Well, I have experienced one out of battery detonation due a resized case being too wide in the radial dimension to fully chamber, and I do not want to repeat the experience. As a precaution I even trial chamber every round of FL sized brass before reloading it for my M1 and M14 types. Now maybe the Norinco product is a bit more forgiving due to its more generous chamber dimensions which are often discussed in this forum.BTW I am a great believer in necksizing and do this extensively for my bolt guns, but not for a lever or semi-auto.

About necksizing

I used to full lenght size my brass, as I was told to so. But since most of my brass were either range pick-up or other once fired, some were already stretched then with consecutive full lenght sizing & triming I end up with a lot of over stretched/thin cases & a lot of scrap.

I try with a small batch of brass that I neck sized, fire, neck sized, fire, neck sized, fire, and so and so
for about 10 times. Never had any malfunction so now I only neck sized using a Lee collet die. I will continue full lenght sizing only for new brass or brass that were not fired in my Garand,

Personnally I keep away from hot load, any way it don't worth it with iron sight only. I guess that since I only use light load it help for case life

In my M1 Garand I use 5 type a ammo & i keep away from any commercial,

Plinker 110Grs CMJ/40 Grs WC-735/WLR crimped or not, around 3000 FPS = minimal accuracy not for shooting beyond 100 yards, recoil & sounds like an SKS, fun shooting very cheap, also perfect for pest control at beaver, racoon, ground hog, they explode on impact,

Serious Plinker 147Grs FMJ-LC/43 Grs IMR4895/WLR crimped , around 2600 FPS = decent shooter fairly accurate up to 200/300 yards,

Target 155Grs A-Max/43 Grs IMR4895/WLR never crimped, minimally seated just to touch rifling, around 2600 FPS = very good accuracy up to 200/300 yards,

Hunting 150Grs FNSP or RNSP/40 Grs IMR4895/WLR crimped , around 2400 FPS = good accuracy up to 200 yards but drop fast,

Very low power 110Grs CMJ or cast 100 Grs RN/20 Grs SR4759/WLR crimped , around 1200 FPS = decent accuracy up to 100 yards but drop very fast, it wont cycle the action so I use a modified gaz cylinder lock screw to bleed the pressure & cancel the op-rop cycling.

shoot 308 ammo, just buy 150 or 165 gr tips.

Why is your hunting load slower then your plinking load?

So what I need to know as a newbie is...if I buy a brand new off the shelf Norinco M14S tomorrow can I just go to Canewbien Tire and buy .308 ammo and fire with it?
rzmitch

You can fire 150gr Can Tire ammo in it - AFTER YOU HAVE DISSASEMBLED YOUR M14 AND CLEANED THE COSMOLINE OUT OF IT, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO MAKING SURE THE FIRING PIN MOVES FREELY AND DOES NOT STICK AT ALL...(and then put it back together, properly lubricated.)

Larry, you don't need to use girly-man hunting loads like this!

My hunting load is 45.0gr IMR 4895 and 165gr SST for 2750fps - 3/4" groups (average!).
