I know, i know, I should have had one in my collection already. But amazingly it's the first time I get an EAL in here. It's only the civilian model, so I guess I now have to get an example of the military, "survival" version too. :)

Was happy to see it has a correct 200 / 400 yard rear sight (although it was re-stamped - I can clearly see the "2" over the "3", and the "4" over the "6"...), and the Jostam butt pad is in good shape. Yay!

Not a holy grail, but, happy nonetheless to have found this one at a reasonable price.

I have seen a lot more civilian versions then military versions

that one looks in good condition Lou

I think they all had overstamped markings on the rear sights.

I have 2 civi EALs currently, I'll have to check one has the correctly marked rear sight the other has no rear sight, and some horrible drilling and tapping done to the receiver :(

I have owned 3 of them (all civilians) but always seem to end up selling them after the "newness" wears off or my collecting focus changes. I would like to ad another to my safe again sometime and try and hang onto it. Its funny there doesn't seem to be many on the EE anymore, a couple of years ago there was always one or two on there in the 500$ to 700$ range

There was one "on display" at the Chilliwack hacs show in march this year and the guy was asking $1400 for! he either didn't really want to sell it or he was a bit out to lunch I thought, it wasn't even the military version , just a nice clean civilian.
ill wait it out and see if I can find another in the 400$ to $500 range which is about the most I have ever paid for one..

Not to hijack Lou's thread but I thought id post a couple pics for people looking for a "ready made" EAL clone, it is a Parker Hale Deluxe #4
dimensions and feel are very similar to the EAL, truth be told this is actually nicer to shoot, the double ghost ring setup is very quick on target acquisition and makes a very handy quick handling bush rifle. mine has the highest front sight blade I could find and zero is now at about 50yds. you can find these between 150$ and 250$ so alot less than an EAL, if you find one built on a longbranch it still has the Canadian cool factor.
I contemplated sourcing out a red recoil pad to complete the look but after polishing up the brass I decided its not worth it

I beg to differ xcaribooler, I find my Civi EAL much more comfortable than any sporter sporting the original Enfield stock. My primary bush gun is a civi EAL that I bought for $300. I am using it over my mil EAL because of collector value and the military version only have a 5 round magazine. Handy rifle and accurate out to 150 metres with these old eyes, a Bushnell 3x9x40 on top of a no-smith Addley scope mount (in case I want to sell my unaltered EAL).

I hadn't seen this before Lou. Very nice one! Much cleaner than average.

I only difference I notice between my Parker hales and the EAL is the felt recoil from the steel/brass vs the rubber butt pad, I have a mkII sight on the EAL but going to be putting the original back on.

Strongly suggest you put the 200/400 stock EAL sight back on before it gets lost. You won't find one.

Looking for some advise on refinishing an EAL. I recently picked one up that is a nice condition civilian model. somewhere along the way somebody decided to varnish the stock giving it an ugly glossy look. id like to put it back to as close to original finish as possible. My guess would be to use stripper to remove the varnish then give it a few coats of tru oil applied with 400grit sandpaper.? I would appreciate any comments or guidance of if this is the right approach.. thanks

Yes to furniture stripper. No to sandpaper. Use #0000 steel wool to help with the furniture stripper.

No to tru oil. Pure linseed oil, yes.
