Yes the barrel specifically calls for the armalite tube as its about 5/16" longer than a standard rifle length. I know others on the forum have had short stroking issues due to having the wrong gas tube, others may have gotten away with having a short tube.
Will do. I'm taking it out this Sunday. I use lightweight/titanium BCGs in my ar15s along with adjustable gas and taccom lightweight buffers (1.2oz). I think what makes the biggest difference over most people's setups is the lightweight buffers. Removing mass from the bolt is good but removing it from the bolt & buffers is best. That way the gas can be turned as low as possible.
I've taken the buffer weights out of a standard 3oz buffer for the Stag10. We will see how soft it feels.
I finally made it out to the range this weekend to put the stag10 through its paces. It was a decently sunny day, 10°C and quite windy. I bore sighted it on the 100m range and started off with Federal 7.62x51mm 149g FMJs. High and right only by .2 mils each way. Easy fix, dialed it down and over and next one hit bang on. As I kept blasting away the groups started to open up as the barrel got warm due to my excitement. I waited it out and slowed my pace down. Groups with the federal ammo were on average 1 - 1.5 MOA (I'm not that great of a shot). I went through 120 rounds getting used to the rifle. I really wish I hadn't forgotten the bags I had just bought as the consequence was shooting off my range bag with a sling trying to stabilize the rifle. I next tried some SSA nosler 168g HPBTs, they did not shoot as well as the federal to my surprise. More like a 2.5 MOA group. After 10 rounds of that I bumped up to 178g Hornady Match to discover about the same abysmal accuracy of an almost 3 MOA group. Yikes. Back to a few mags of the Federal confirmed it for me, it likes light loads. Picture below is the very last group I shot with 149g 7.62x51s.
I wouldn't give up on the heavier loads. Almost all 1/10 twist barrels like 168g or 175g.
Next range trip grab a box of Federal GMM 168g + 175g. Remember to take your bags with nice and slow fire some groups. It will get you the groups you are looking for.
