Much thanks!

For the purpose of completeness, here's a summary of my project. It's quite evident from the pictures (except the details of the stock splice).

I bought a used stock from an M-1938 from Numrich. I cut the stock of the TOZ-78 behind the sling swivel and cut the M44 stock 2" behind the rearmost barrel band. I spliced the pieces together using two 3/4 inch lengths of poplar 3/16 dowel in drilled holes. There is enough space to do this if you cut the M44 stock where there is some "meat". The spliced piece was glued (Gorilla Glue) and sanded down to match the TOZ stock. The TOZ stock was modified into a straight wrist with no checkering, indentations in the forestock, and modified for a Mosin-Nagant buttplate. There was a slot cut for the dog-collar sling.

This overall setup allows the barrel to float but gives the gun a nice mannlicher stock and handguard.

I gave the stock a dark stain to blend the stock splice and 3 coats of red shellac (like a real nagant!).

I ended up using two front barrel bands instead of a front and a rear one. This was because there is nothing to hold the handguard from sliding back and so you need that extra tightness for a friction hold so that the handguard stays solidly put. I had to bend out the rear barrrel band a bit but it fits perfect now.

Hey that's a good idea about the bolt handle. I can do that with a dremel.

It is the Kalinka scope mount with the 1" diameter tube and a red star scope from accumounts.

Beautiful. Only word that comes to mind.

cheers

** I was wondering what you used for the receiver/barrel... bascily all the metal on this rifle? I've been wanting a .22 Rifle with that nice milsurp look and feel. I've been waiting for the Norc KWW Trainer to be back in stock for a year now. But this rifle you built is just on another level. Do you have pics of a before and after and even in between of your work and also maybe give some tips on how someone ( me ) could achieve something similar to this? :) That would be awsome.

Cheers

All the rifle is, is a modified Bakail TOZ-78-01 with some Mosin-Nagant stock parts and wood added in to the mix.

I used to have before/after/during pics, but I've since disposed of them!

I think all you need to make these little projects is some woodworking tools and your imagination. I've made lots of similar projects and I am not an expert by any stretch. Just a tinkerer with a dremel and a dream.
