I got my Marlin 1895 sbl about a month ago, but still hadn't had a chance to fire it yet. At home, I haven't yet found a good crown land shooting spot, i'm still waiting for my application to be processed at the local range, and my friends with more rural properties have all been busy, so it just hasn't happened yet.

But this week we're camping north of lake superior, and following a thread here on how to use the crown land use atlas to find shooting spots (a really good thread, even if it was like ten years old), I located a big tract of general use crown land just 5 minutes from the camp ground down an old dirt road.

I went down there today and set up my target and tried her out.

I shot my browning x-bolt 308 with some 180g rounds first just to get warmed up, and then went for the marlin using some 350g rounds.

I gotta say, I was so impressed. It shot so smoothly, so nicely. Mind you, I did install the matching muzzle brake on it, but all the same, the recoil was definitely less harsh than my 308. My 308 packs such a kaboom, sometimes I actually worry about it jumping out of my hands! But the marlin felt really smooth and easy, it was great to shoot.

The only problem was, it hit the target so hard, it snapped the bolt holding the chain on! I"l have to find a replacement so I can go shooting again before we leave.

Nice!

What muzzle brake do you have on it? I was thinking of going with the 2 baffle Spearhead Machine brake...

Thanks!
I got this "comet brake" from red deer shooting centre. I didn't do a lot of research on it, to be honest, I just bought it because the people at prophet river who sold me the marlin recommended it. RDSC shipped fast, and the brake actuallt arrived before the marlin did!

I don't have the right wrench with me to remove it, or I would experiment the difference between shooting with or without it.
But with it, it's definitely a nice gun to shoot.

Are you waiting to get into PSAH? I'll have to keep an eye out for your Marlin.

They are a blast to shoot. I have a JM guide gun in 45-70, very slick and reliable action. They only get better with time and use. If you reload or decide to get into reloading, cast bullets can be a lot of fun as well.

Nice, you local? I am waiting on PSAH. I filled out the application and paid the money and all that, but I understand it takes 6-8 weeks to approve a membership, and then 4 supervised shoots after that.

I actually don't mind the 4 supervised shoots, as I have no experience in a club range and so i'd really like to get the ettiquette down. I do wish the whole process could go a little quicker though! Ah, well, I guess patience is good.

It's a 45-70, so a brake is nice.

Why is it weird to put a brake on a lever action?

The muzzle comes threaded just for that purpose, so why not?

Yep but I think the no.1 reason for the threaded muzzle is for the Americans to run a suppressor.

To the other posters. Is that worse than a brake here on CGN?

brake would be nice on one of them 45-70's for the range work...they are handy for anything that hits back like that, threaded barrels are good, I don't shoot hitters anymore so don't need brakes and glad to never have to deal with the blast/noise from touching off without ears which I would think for a lever gun around camp or hunting would be thread protector only, eventually suppressors will become a thing so those of us with threaded barrels will love that we have future proof rifles, relax...govt. is collapsing before our eyes, some can't see that far down the road but when it does we will fix the whole suppressor thing, and pistol/AR thing while we're at it...my posts will age well, get them threaded barrels boys and girls, versatility is good, I'll tell Korth to start working on the relationship with TBAC to become Canadian distributor lol

Not local but have family in the area. It's a great range. The waiting is never fun but beats the 3-4 year wait lists for some ranges in the GTA. I shoot at a few clubs and I'd say it's one of the better ones. Good bunch of people.
