okay, so after a bunch of reading, and the final push from you guys.. i finally am about to sit down for my first reloading session..
however i have a bunch of questions... and want to get them cleared up before i head into town in case i have to stop and get anything else.

i'm loading two cartridges (not at the same time) .308, and .300winmag

here is what i have on hand

hodgdon h4198, hodgdon h1000 (powder is scarce so i'm forced to work with what i have unfortunately)
federal n0.210 large rifle primers.
hornady 165gr interlock btsp

i have come to the conclusion that the h4198 may not be the ideal powder for the .308, can't find any load data for any bullet weight over 130gr. however, if you have a load suggestion for the h4198/165gr bullet... please make your suggestions.

for the 300win, the lee manual suggests with h1000 & 165grn bullet that 79.0 grains is the starting point , but also indicates that it is a compressed charge.. so maybe better to pick up some 180gr bullets..

also, i am under the impression that it may be wise to pick up some magnum primers for use with the h1000?

well. maybe these are more like statements than questions.. however i would appreciate your input prior to my trip into town today. if its any help.... i am mainly hunting with these reloads... but wouldn't mind target shooting some more... so if possible any suggestions you do have would need to be dual purpose of lean more towards effective loads for deer and like game.

thanks again! i appreciate everybody's support in these new endeavours.

If you can find it something in the range of Varget / IMR4064 /IMR4895 or IMR4320 would work well for the 308.
I can't comment on the 300win, other than to ask: is it the starting load that is compressed, or the max load?

as far as powder goes, wholesale sports is the closest thing to me (read only) and they have nothing for powders.
and in regard to the 300 win. both starting load, and max load state that its a compressed load. if i move up to 180 grn with h1000 the grains drop to 76.0 start up to 81.0 max (compressed)

i noticed when loading my .300win with hornady 180gr SST and 76gr h1000 when seating the bullet to the cannelure i can hear the bullet compressing the powder. is this normal? 76gr is the starting load for 180gr/h1000
thanks in advance.

i just had a look at the lee manual, and the hornady for edition. lee manual suggests 76 gr. start. hornady manual suggests 74gr start/ so now i am a little confused.

All manuals will be a little different. Nothing to worry about.
Once you get into hand loading you will soon realize the numbers in the books are guide lines
Most of my rifles with take powder charges over listed max and still show no pressure signs.
Not that I settle on loads that hot.
