I finally got my hands on a mini 14, and I really like it. It's more accurate than my vz 858, and its recoil is comaprable to a .22, and it is more quiet.

A few changes I'm interested in making to it are:

Fitting it with a m14-style flash hider

And getting a couple of old Ruger Factory 5/20 round mags for it.

I'll probably have to make the flash-hider though, as the gun is a very recent (namely 2008) model.

That one is on my wish list also. I've never shot one but it seems like it would be allot of fun to shoot. I'm not sure if I would rather have the Mini 14 or the Mini 30 though? Probably lean towards the mini 14 for ammo availability.

I've got the wood/blued model. I'm more traditionalist on these kind of rifles. I haven't modded it yet, and I've only put 5 rounds through it so far. As I said before, it is very nice to shoot and is quite a sturdy little gun.

Congrats

I have had a mini 14 for years. I really like mine as well. Prepare yourself for some mini-bashing. You either like them or hate them and you will hear from both sides especially on this forum. I bought a mini 14 in 6.8 SPC this summer and will try it on deer this year. They're easy to tote around, can take some unintended abuse and are easy to clean/maintain.
You shouldn't have any problems picking up some surplus .223 rounds and you can reload them cheaply as well. Have fun with it!

mini-14's are great rifles. not target guns, but fun guns to shoot. m14 type flash hiders are very common....blue or stainless.

UCSPanther,

Do you know which series of the Mini-14 you have? I am interested in getting a Mini-30. I am wondering how much of a difference the new barrel profile on the Mini-14 & 30's are making.

the mini-30 barrel profile has not changed.

ruger used to have 2 different barrel diameters/gas blocks: one that was .625" under the gas block (mini-30) and one that was .5625" (mini-14).

now they use one diameter gas block and all the barrels under the gas block are the old mini-30 diameter of .625". they managed to marginally thicken up the mini-14 barrel and reduce manufacturing costs in one move.

if you have a new mini, i wouldnt even bother looking around for a flash hider to fit it. take it to your smith and have the barrel threaded to 1/2x28TPI. initially this will cost you a bit more than a flash hider would, however it will let you choose from any AR-15 flash hider you want. some of these can be had for as little as $15, and most are much better than the mini-14 slip-on flash hiders.

Interesting... I was just going by Ruger's 2008 brochure that said " All Mini-14 Ranch rifles and Mini Thirty rifles come with a barrel that is heavier than its predecessor, for extra rigidity and accuracy".

It is supposed to be the same changed profile under the handguard as well as the taper after the gas block as the new 6.8 SPC barrel.

I had seen some pictures illustrating the differences. I will see if I can find them again.

Found some pics from another site.
