Preacher, it depends a lot on eye relief and scope proportions. I have a #1B in .270 that wears a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 just fine. On the other hand I also have a #1V in .22-250 that has a Weaver KT-15 on it and I'm using double offset rings. While the Weaver is definitely the better scope it has a rather long objective bell that simply doesn't let you slide the scope very far back. If you need offset rings they will run about $90.

Having said that I'd simply make sure that the scope you buy has lots of eye relief and allows for a variety of mounting positions. A Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 like I have on my .35 Whelen would likely be perfect for your .405. Take a look on E-Bay. Mine was bought, shipped and through customs for $320.
