Finally Got My Ruger #1H - 405 Win

1. Do any of you guys with #1s find that you have a bit of trouble getting the scope far enough to the rear to get the right cheek weld and scope picture?

Preacher, it depends a lot on eye relief and scope proportions. I have a #1B in .270 that wears a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 just fine. On the other hand I also have a #1V in .22-250 that has a Weaver KT-15 on it and I'm using double offset rings. While the Weaver is definitely the better scope it has a rather long objective bell that simply doesn't let you slide the scope very far back. If you need offset rings they will run about $90.

These are the double offset rings for your rifle:

Having said that I'd simply make sure that the scope you buy has lots of eye relief and allows for a variety of mounting positions. A Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 like I have on my .35 Whelen would likely be perfect for your .405. Take a look on E-Bay. Mine was bought, shipped and through customs for $320.

Off the bench, the old scope works okay, but off hand it is way too far away from my eye with the thing pulled back as far as I can get it.

I will have to save up for the 2-7X33 VX-II. Should work good, and I love Leupold's scopes when I can afford 'em.

the 2-7x33 is good, but the 1.5-5 VXIII is even better if you can afford it :)
