Took a couple of weeks to get it in, but I finally took her home today. .30-06 111FL with the Accutrigger, lefty. She's wearing a Barska 6-24x42 scope for target right now, but that will probably change to a 3-9x Nikon Buckmasters when I pick up a proper .308 for target and this .30-06 becomes my hunting gun.

Shane at Reliable removed the sights for me, and I installed the scope and cleaned her at home. I never realized how dirty the inside of a new barrel can be...had to run the bronze brush through it a few times and lots of patches came out black before it was finally clean! Now she's oiled and ready for the range...can't wait.

Who needs coffee table books when you have a rifle? Quite the conversation piece. Also doubles as a remote for the TV. Unfortunately it's only good for turning the TV OFF!

And turning off the lights. The only problem is I always seem to have all these glass shards lying around all the time, but it's better than burning my fingers unscrewing the bulb the conventional way :p

Nice rifle, it'll give you lots of accurate shooting pleasure.

Thanks guys. :) I'm just starting out with the rifle thing, and this is my first one (larger caliber bolt action anyway)...so she isn't as pretty as some of the toys I've seen posted here that's made me drool, :D but I know I'll have lots of fun shooting it.

I've made two loads that I'm going to try out...
1) Varget 49.5gr, 165gr PSP, LR primer.
2) Varget 48.5gr, 165gr PSP, LR primer.

Some of you guys who have been shooting a Savage 111 .30-06 for a while and also reload...I wouldn't mind if there's a recipe you've found that you really like for accuracy. Cheers!

Each savage is fired 5 times (a full mag) as part of the final inspection and proofing. The shooter then scrubs a wet patch of solvent through the barrel, followed by a dry patch and then an oiled one.

A brand new barrel will foul badly until broken in - about 20 shots or so. sO THE barrel you got would not have been adequatley cleaned. Cleaning is too time intensive to be part of the production process.

Rem338win: Thanks for the tip...I'll think about which one of those powders I might want to try if I'm not happy with the Varget.

Ganderite: I was thinking that what you have explained is probably what happened...shot at the factory to test it before shipping out and not cleaned well, or maybe goop to keep corrosion away inside the bore. My top load mag only fits 3 .30-06 cartridges inside and one in the chamber. I thought the capacity was four, but when I shoved the fourth on in there, the other cartridges got stuck and I had to strip down the rifle to get them out.

Cheers.

Well, the cheapo Barska 6-24x42 scope didn't last very long on my .30-06. :) It was an experiment as the price was very attractive from ebay, and it has a lifetime warranty. After 10 shots, the reticle was tilted 45* and in fact fell right off its mount. :D That scope is now on its way back to California so that a new one can be sent back to me. I imagine that the replacement will take the place of my Leapers 3-9x32 scope that is now on my Savage Mk II GL. The higher magnification will be much nicer to see the little .22 holes on paper, although it will make really close in shots impossible. Oh well, the 10/22 has the same Leapers scope on it for that duty.

So...when I destroyed this scope, I decided that it really wasn't worth it to buy cheapo scopes for something with higher recoil like my .30-06. The Barska would have probably done just fine up to a .223, but anything more than that would have eventually destroyed it also. I ended up buying a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40SF scope, and a Harris 9-13" bipod. I should have gone with these high quality products to begin with...now I know. :) I can't be more pleased with the clarity of this scope even in the higher magnification power range. Comes with a lifetime warranty from Nikon USA (the Canadian one only has a 25 year warranty for some reason), an extra set of target knobs, a sunshade, and anti-fog wipes.

Here's how it looks now:

As with my Savage rimfire, the stock seems to be touching slightly on the right side and is not really "freefloating". I'm going to have to think about what I want to do, as this is probably going to impact accuracy a little.

Cheers.

Just wrap sandpaper around an old broomstick handle and open up the barrel channel a bit.

Gotta luv them Savages/Stevens.
