Went to Toronto with my GF for the weekned, decided to stop at LeBarons to see what they have. I wanted to see if they have the SPS Tact. so I asked their 'gun guy' if they have one -which knew sh*t abot guns! So he said no and said they don't carry them...I said ok and started to brouse around...sure enough I found the gun on their display. :rolleyes: I asked to see it (someone form another departmant was helping out) but didn't plan on buying it...long story short my girlfriend talked me in getting it :D so I'm now the proud owner of a brand spenking new .308 Reminton 700! (she said she didn't want to hear how about how I didn't get it for the rest of the weekned lol).

I'm a handgun guy and this is actually my first centerfile rifle! (I have other long guns though). anyways I have a couple of (basic) question;

1. What kind of scope mounts do I need for this gun? what's a good deal if I don't want to spend a lot?

2. Do I need anything to mount a Harris bipod?

Bipod will grip onto the sling stud.

Scope mounting... you will need a scope base and scope rings. I would suggest a Picatinny style 1 piece base. Kyle Precision, Richard Near, TPS, Ken Farrell are all great scope bases. Most of these companies have excellent rings too.

Stay away from cheap shyte... enjoy.
 
change the stock first, than get a one piece scope mount ( Ken Farrel - steel), same for rings( Leupold QRW or PRW - steel)....and a good scope (Leupold Mark 2 - is my choise)....
 
lol fine I'll post some pics (of the gun that is ;) ) tonight when I get home.

btw I really don't want to spend a lot of money on the mounts and rings :S is there anything decent for under $50? edit: I'll probably spend a couple hundred on a scope

I got Leupold rings and bases for my Tikka, they didn't break the bank and are pretty popular. I also went with a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope. Around 200 bucks and nice glass for the price. You can cheap out but if you spend the money for an accurate rifle you might as well spend the money for half decent glass as well.
 
If you went with a cheap 0 MOA base, I would get a set of Burris Signature Z-rings with offset's. The rings are about $100 but are well worth it, I really like mine. Talk to Mysitc, he can hook you up.
 
Don't cheap out on the mounts & rings. A quality TPS picatinny base & a set of their TSR picatinny rings will run you around $200.00.

Check the EE and see if you can't hunt up a gently used or new take-off HS Precision VS or LTR stock, or alternately, go whole hog and order a new McMillan A-3, A-4 or A-5 or AICS chassis system.

Buy the best glass you can afford. You can live with the tupperware stock a little longer if that means you have to comprimise on glass.

Depending on the trigger and your own level of handiness, the stock trigger can use a little work. Best bet is to have a gunsmith smooth it out for you and lighten it to about 2-2.5 lbs. Don't go super light, especially since this is your first rifle. The above range will be fine for benchwork without comprimising field safety if you ever take it hunting.

i would recomend starting with a bushnell 3200 elite fixed 10 power. almost everywhere you look you can find em for about 230. as for rings, try to find burris 1" short extreme tactical rings. i found mine for 60. as the scope base, look around i got a leo for 180. get rid of the stock. using a bipod with the hogue is horrible...to much barrel to stock rubbing, or shoot from a bag/rest (bell&carlson XCR?). the trigger i would leave until you shoot a bit more, learn your gun, what ammo it like, where you cold shot will go and many other factors you find along the way. if you change to much to fast youll have issues knowing what problem is caused by what item you changed
