I've bought two K98's off of the EE over the last year. For awhile one of them (the blonde) was partly disassembled and serving as an "organ donor" for the other one so I could shoot it. I've ordered a couple of rounds of parts from Numrich, and they are both up to scratch now. Here are some pics:

The blonde:
- DOT 44
- refurbed in Czech at some point
- Nazi markings gone, some post war Czech markings
- Czech-style front sight hood
- all matching including the stock, except for the safety which is electro penciled (and maybe one or two other small parts).
- Was in this condition when I bought it, except for the Numrich repro sling. Looks like it just came out of the factory (or at least the refurb depot)
- shoots great
- was $550 shipped

The brunette:
- BYF 44
- No capture markings, although it looks like it probably was a capture of some sort
- All Nazi markings still present
- reciever and bolt match, other parts are mis-matched but correct
- correct front sight hood, cleaning rod, and capture screws added from Numrich. Band spring that was on there when I recieved it was wrong (too short). Correct one now obtained. Repro sling. Cleaning rod nut was missing from the stock when I got it. A very cool CGN'er sent me one in the mail.
- Fantastic shooter. This one is a gong-banger supreme. I can see why these were popular with soldiers and stayed in service (in various forms and generations) for so long.
- was $450 shipped, and has about $40 parts put in it, and the $30 sling.

They are both great looking items, ghostie! We have a BYF 44 that I've been meaning to dissect a little more thoroughly to see what it has been through, it's an amazing shooter. Quite a wallop with surplus.

Is any dealer sells those in Canada?
There aren't any dealers bringing in K98's lately. Lots in the country to be had on the used market, but if you have access to warehouses in Russia or elsewhere in Eastern Europe.. well, I'd be very curious to know what you can turn up. :)

I know you saw the recent discussion about Russian Captures and I think interest in them would be pretty high up here.

I heard a lot about how good this rifle is. I will look into this once I am there again. I have to figure out how much this one costs.
Also how is the ammo situation for this one?

Thanx

For surplus it's a pretty similar situation to 7.62x54r. It's around in private hands and at gunshows atleast in my experience, usually a wise investment if you spot it in the wild. I would imagine the major ammo importers are looking for ways to get another batch into the country as well since there is certainly demand for it.

You seem to be fairly open about discussing stuff so I'm sure you would be able to get a lot of feedback on whatever you can find, whether it's worth bringing in and what might be considered premium items. I'm not an authority on them by any means but if they can be brought in cheaply, go for it.

Could you tell me the overall length of the k98 sling that you have? As I have one and it does not quite work so well..

The sling that is in the pictures is part # 726100A or 726100B at Numrich (they are the same, one is listed as "Israeli .308 CAL" for some reason, but there is no difference between them). They are 7/8" wide and 51" OAL. They sell for $27.05 U.S. (keep in mind the export fee though, order it in an order of $100 worth of stuff to spread out the pain).

The slings seem good. I generally just keep them tight, as I don't actually carry a K98 with me on hikes through the mountains, but it seems as though it would work reasonably well for carrying the rifle. I bought the slings as I think that the K98 rifle looks "naked" without it. The sling is part of the classic look of the rifle.

The slings are pretty stiff when you get them, and the way they work you have to fold it over the front sling mount 180 degrees, so that takes some time to break in. I think you would want them stiff though, as one of the problems with original K98 slings is they are all broken down like a wet noodle - and are probably somewhat fragile as well. The repros are tough.

Another weird thing... they smell like fish when you first get them and take them out of the bag.... but that goes away pretty quick.

The way I see it if I bring them in lot's of people would say what about ammo. I need to figure out if someone sells the ammo and then look into bringing those. What in your opinion is the demand for those. I don't want to bring it and then have those stuck in the warehouse.
Any feedback from all of you appreciated.

BRING THEM IN BRING THEM IN!

The more RC K98's the better.

Absolutely they will sell. You can find 8mm ammo at any Canadian Tire just like 303 Brit. Anyone who collects and shoots milsurps HAS to reload for one calibre or another so buying 8mm dies and components isn't an issue.

They will sell faster then most Enfields and look at the lack of surplus for those! I know if you bring em in I will definitely pick one up!

Those are some nice looking rifles

there still seems to be a ok amount of 8mm yugo ammo floating around, i've picked up 150 rounds or so with out really searching it out...its easier to get hands on then .303 surplus
