Finally got my VG SOCOM **Range Report**

The nice thing for you is that you have the phantom, I shot beside a guy with one a Bushmaster AR and it is LOUD never mind the flash, its like a flashbang coming out of the end of the barrel. I'm going to get Jeff to do my SOCOM build once the M305's arrive. Kudo's to you and Jeff at Valley gunsmithing.Pop's give us a PM, I'm a civi now.

Could you share what you had done (besides the Navy front sight, 18.5" barrel chop, Rooster spring guide (I'm assuming that), and the phantom fh- anything else? I'm going to be doing the same thing very shortly - any info appreciated. What kind of scope mount is that?

I got the r33 spring guide, tac release, and cheek peice as well as the phantom FH, usgi stock, vented handguard, and navy sight. I can't realy say the price for various reasons, but contact Jeff at Valley as he is very informative and helpful. I would say it would cost in the $1000 ballpark including rifle price. The mount is an ARMS#18. I must say that the fit and finish on this rifle is superb, no need to bed as far as I can tell. And I have owned many M1A/M14's... this one is really tight.
Took my new rifle to the range today. Well its having some teething problems. First round does not always feed, but jams as if the feed ramp is too steep. The ARMS mount kicks brass back into ejection port occassionally. These I think I can fix or it may will dissapate over time and use.
Now for the question of accuracy. Well with grade three milsurp ball it is consistantly 3.5 to 4.0 MOA, but with 168gr match ammo it was 1.25" at 100m at best and 2.0" at worst. I am happy with the accuracy, it is quite acceptable for its design. Plus I did not really use a solid bench rest for the test.
Bottom Line: I would do it again and recommend Jeff Smith at Valley Gunsmithing. I'm a little dissapointed in the fuction problems, but this is a Norc prob not the smithing. I'm confidant I will solve the prob. The package with the Replica Aimpoint and Leupold 1.5-5 MR/T with the ARMS Mount and ARMS QR rings cost me less than other SOCOM's on the market (and thats just the rifle). Now I think I'll paint her green

That is fabulous accuracy with your 168 grainers grouping between 1.25" and 2.0". Isn't that amazing, a moose / bear gun for around $ 1000 ? Very well done project.
Now, did you grease up you bolt lugs, bolt raceways, op rod guide, op rod track, hammer nose ? Get 'er all lubed and then test fire... let us know if the grease helps the functioning.
This is one department where the Norinco M305 leaves the AR15's in the dust ! Still have your modularity, short carbine, but one heck of a punch at moose or bear or other large ungulates !

Yep, I had her all greased up. I was a little concerned as the match group average was 2.0" abouts. But if you say that is exellent, I trust ya. I was very pleased with the 4 shot 1.25" group though. The surplus accuracy was horrible... and I've still got 3000 rounds of it. I thought the gun was NFG but tested the ammo in my sniper rifle and it wasn't much better. I have fixed the feeding problem... don't really know how. I took it apart to clean and see what was wrong, couldn't find anything so I reassembled. Now it functions perfectly. Except for the brass getting jammed between the op rod and the ARMS mount.
I will definately post pics of the painted product. Planning on a base green with subtle brown striping at first. Then maybe multi cam after I get some paint practice in.

I'm looking forward your guys range reports for different Socom, I still can't decide which socom should I buy, socom 16 or socom II with extend rail system. I like to have option to use aimpoint and Leupold replica scope, but for $200 more you can get whole rail system that's not bad compare to purchase from after market. Do I need to use 2 mount for aimpoint and leupold clone? I'm new to rifle scope any idea will be great. thank you.

If you really want a SOCOM get a regular size barrelled SA or Norc & then get it chopped up to 18.5''.
If you acquire either the Scout 18'' or Socom II 16'' from Springfield, you'll be disappointed when you have to get an ATT for the range or can't bring it to the gravel pit as ours can.

I'll talk to the guyz building mine about this issue & am sure it can be rectified or at least substituted by a lower match ammo..Wrst comes to worst their is always crappy milsurp to fire it with.
