Finally got to the range

Having a boating accident.
Well, finally got to fire the SKS today. Took 100 rounds of ammo and off I went.

Loaded it up! Click.....

Cycle action after waiting to make sure we didn't have a delayed firing.

looked at round... Hmmm, primer has been struck.. Oh well..

"click".. repeat several more times........ FINALLY.. BANG.. This surplus ammo I got is pretty crappy! Out of 100 rounds, about 30 did not fire.

That being said. The rifle performed well, and I got it sighted in and making decent groups in no time.

Might sound like a noob post but have you cleaned the firing pin? Could cause it to have light strikes..sometimes cosmoline or other debris gets in there and causes it to stick..can cause slam fires too.
 
Cleaned the crap outta it before going to the range. Hoppes number 9. Not only does it clean, it makes me high if I use it in an enclosed room... :cool: LOL

The strikes on the primer were pretty deep, I'll take a pic of a few of them and post 'em tonight.

Crate full of surplus from Canada ammo. Not Can Am's fault of course, but the stuff is older than I am, and I'm 43... LOL

Cleaned the crap outta it again last night, will "range it" again this weekend, see if I missed something on the receiver side.......

i have great success with czech ammo ... i cant explain how you would get 30/100 FTF with deep primer hits.:confused:
 
You only brought 100 rounds to the range? well that's your first problem. ;)

I agree with the others though, something is wrong and my guess is it's not the ammo.
 
hm....

I brought 200rds first time out with the SKS, all of them fired. They were czech surplus from Lever

actually it doesnt but i think its not the ammo but before i say what i think i need you to post a pic of the bolt with the firing pin all the way out.

on my pic, note the amount of protrusion of the firing pin, is it same as yours? the czech casing shows deeper than yours.

The depth of the hit is the result of energy or force. Ignition is caused by shock. i.e. ignition is caused by hammer velocity.

It is common to have a deep indent in an unfired case. Usually caused by shortening the firing pin fall and making up energy loss by switching to a stronger spring.

If it was my rifle I would rinse the breech block in gas or varsol. Would try some ammo in a different rifle, too.

If I'm remembering correctly, my sks hits the primers a lot harder than that. Sorry, no pics.

One thing, make sure the firing pin is completely dry; no oil at all. Rule of thumb, the pin should rattle in the bolt. I'm not sure how it would cause light strikes, but something easy to check anyway.

oh, its new, i assumed it used cos i recall you bot it at a gun auction.

then forget what i said.

My first SKS did the exact same thing (threaded barrel, not pinned).

Sometimes it FTF with Czech ammo, loved Hungarian and US stuff.

You could try *ever* so slightly rounding the FP. Also a good idea to take it out and clean it.


Anyway, mine was solved by eventually ordering a new FP and a good internal cleaning of the FP channel. Get a BIG hammer to drive the retainer out.
