I have had a 10.5" Norinco AR for a few years now and have only had it out 4 or 5 times due to MY club not allowing restricted rifles, so I always had to drive 45 minutes and pay to be a guest at Silverdale if I wanted to shoot it. Not the end of the world, but a PITA just to shoot one of my guns. Recently one of our clubs directors took it upon himself to get in contact with the CFO to have our rules updated and NOW I can shoot my AR-15 at my home club! Too bad all that cheap Norc ammo is a thing of the past :(

how can it be a "range" if its not allowed restricted? otherwise it would be just a shooting hole
Because they do things differently than NR rifles?
Don't know about Ontario, but in Nova Scotia a range needs additional approval from the CFO before it's approved for restricted frearm use. Not saying it makes sense, just speculating that maybe the reason ARs were not allowed was that the club hadn't obtained approval for any restricted firearms. However, if it was already approved for restricted but the club didn't allow restricted rifles that doesn't really make sense.

Some arent rated for centre-fire never mind restricted.
Plus remember in Ontario its the club that used to babysit ATTs. Plus insurance regs..etc.
I really suggest people look into what goes into operating clubs...not businesses that offer a shooting range, but real bona fide clubs before they go pouncing on why this or why that.

Maple Leaf Revolver Club

We have a 70 yard cross range rifle range that goes diagonal across the outdoor 50 yard pistol range. We could always use restricted hand guns and shoot those at the 50 or the cross range 70 targets but restricted rifles where never allowed for some reason, yet I could bring in a mini-14 that is pretty much the same at an AR when it comes to caliber and action so it never made any sense. Regardless, it is now legit and I can shoot without traveling and paying to be a guest.

As for mag capacity, we are limited to 5 rounds in any guns, revolvers, semi's doesnt matter, CLUB RULE is 5 rounds unless you are a quest of a member, in that case you get one round at a time until your host feels you are comfortable and safe enough to let you have 5 at a time.

Yeah, that's a weird one. Once a range is approved for restricted it's the calibre safety templates that should have dictated what was allowed, not the usually arbitrary exclusion of restricted rifles, especially, as you mentioned, NR rifles that are functionally the same were allowed. Anyway--I'm glad they came to their senses!

5 round rule sounds painfull. Round up some new blood to take over the excecutive committee.

Was this approval for an indoor range or outdoor range? I wouldn't be surprised if it was an indoor range since the CFO needs to approve that the backstop is rated for 223 cartridges. If it is for outdoor, then I am not sure what the restriction reasoning would have been.

I was a member of Target Sports before and they didn't allow 223 until they replaced and upgraded their backstop.

Its funny, we had a member bring up changing the internal rule on 5 rounds and at our annual meeting where everything is voted on, I saw old guys I have never seen before, these old fudds where coming out of the woodwork to vote it down, yet they are never even at the club. When the hands were counted they must have counted the hands voting for the rules to be changed about 4 times, when the hands came up against it, they counted once and called it a day, and we were only out voted by around 2 votes.

I thought one of the biggest things about having a range certified for Restricted was the requirement for a RO to be present at all times.

Not at my range. There is a 1600m, 500m rifle ranges, 25&50m rimfire range, pistol bay, and trap area. Certified for up to, and including .50BMG. You can be there all day by yourself if you want.
