Finally - I got a response from the govt as to why AR15s are restricted!

yea, but since you're dealing with a quebec mp, you have to muddy the question as much as possible, then re-word it so he THINKS he's voting FOR prohibiting ALL OTHER FORMS OF THE SPORT when he's really voting against it- ie reverse

Or slip him a 10 dollar bill

Whoa..... am thinking about the use of double-negatives in the French language.....too complicated....can't wrap my head around it....

I think I'll use one of my favourite Star Trek quotes instead... "None of your interfering Vulcan logic, Mr. Spock!!!"

-AR15 are not banned, they are just restricted
-You are right the SPAS-12 is a prohibited weapon, but they're made by Franchi, not Benelli...

I stand corrected. I knew that, but got too frustrated to type and think clearly when the nonsensical rules come to mind. :HR:
...thanks for setting it straight.;)

We need an MP that owns an AR-15 or handgun to inform parliament just how unfair the restricted gun laws. I would be very surprised if out of 308 MP's that there is one that owns a restricted firearm. If there was I would guess it would be Julian Fantino.

I've visited my MP (NDP) twice this year already and although he agrees that hunter and competitive shooters should be allowed to use firearms, he thinks that all other use of firearms should be prohibited and that all firearms and ammo should be locked up in shooting/hunter and anglers gun vault!

By the way, he's a great guy but I don't expect him to vote for an law which would make the AR15 non-restricted and we need a global approach to the gun control issue.

In the meantime, I'll pay my NFA and CSSA dues and will keep on voting Conservative!

I talked to my MP also.

In any case, although he was quick to point out the death of the LGR, was quite unaware of the issues surrounding AR15s.

And per his website, he served in the armed forces reserves for 33 years. I'd have expected he'd at least be aware of the restrictions on the AR platform because of his military service, but I was completely mistaken. It seemed to come as news to him.

I don't think this really is of interest to our MP's,but that's not to say that it couldn't become one, if with a moderate, logical arguement we asked them to take a look at it.

I like this idea, even if we could find a mp with a restricted and no ar, I would be willing to donate some money to get them one, seems news worthy to me.

I will admit I haven’t contacted my MP about specifically re-classifying a single firearm, but I have to say I doubt she would have any knowledge of such a specific issue with in the realm of firearms control. I can barely make heads or tails of this and it has been my primary hobby for years.

Well I guess you just confirmed that...

But it seems like we're not doing anything to contact our own mp's. Out of all these posts, no one has actually said, "yes, I wrote my MP". All I did was talk to mine... and because of the response, I basically gave up on him- I'll write to Vic Toews and cc the PM instead.

I like the CSSA's "Trucks have changed since grampa got his.... so have hunting rifles" picture on their website:
http://www.cdnshootingsports.org [...e they're in a majority government situation.

So, who here has contacted the govt/their MP and asked that the law be changed? And what answer did you get?

Does coaching my MP while he was shooting an AR for the first time count? Or showing him restricted and prohibited handguns, and pointing out that there was essentially no difference between the two?
Have you had your MP to a range yet?

For those interested, I suggest reading the transcripts of the committee hearings during C17 and C68. It is all explained in there.

i know google's my friend, but if you could post a link it would help. and what's your opinion, having read the transcripts?

it will take time exploring the parliamentary website to find them, but they are there.

basically a US-style point system was used to define the guns to ban.

awesome- you've made an effort to educate your MP hands -on- which is more than I've done; all I did was point out the stupidities while on the phone to him. what was your mp's response at the end of it? more sympathetic to firearms?

and the restricted/prohib debate is another one, also well worth exploring.

My possibly-EX MP did make it to the rank of LtCol, so I assume he's been to a range or two, probably C7s, C8s and Inglis-Brownings. However, his conversation generally suggested that he had minimal personal interest in firearms, since he was busy talking about how the hunters he knew were benefitting now that the LGR was gone.

He was shooting the AR after having shot a "precision" rifle for the first time.
We will be hosting a similar shoot again this fall.

so what did he think?

there's a scene in "American Beauty" where Annette Bening's character fires a handgun and seems (almost?) orgasmic about the whole experience. was it anything like that for him?

Are you sure google is your friend.
