Well with tax season upon us, I was thinking of setting aside some money for buying some of the major pieces of reloading equipment (about $500 or so). This is going to be my first time purchasing, so I'm a little unsure of a few things. Here's what I intend to do/not do so far:
1) don't buy anything with plastic parts (as seen from previous threads)
2) buy a single stage press, possibly new
3) buy brand new powder equipment (trickler, scale, etc)

I'm not going to be casting my own bullets. Buying bullet components (primers, brass, etc) and dies will be at a later date as they are cheaper to buy than the equipment itself. Right now, I'm just thinking of buying the more expensive pieces when I get the money to set aside for it.

So, without wanting to start a wildfire on here, which companies should I be looking at to buy from? I'm looking for good and bad reasons and personal experience. I know some places offer kits, but I don't know what to look for. What Canadian companies are out there that offer anything for reloading? For a person getting into this for the first time, I'm really looking for lots of advice and personal experience to help me out.

Both Lee and RCBS offer kits - good way to go for a newbie. The RCBS is about twice as much - less plastic, etc. I bought the Lee Anniversary Kit (150$) years ago, works fine for me. Both kits are capable of making great ammo. Dies are purchased separately, and can be used interchangeably.
I think its easy to go overboard in this reloading business - there's lots of gizmos and gadgets. Fact is, the quality of most home rolled ammo is limited by the skills of the operator.

Were I purchasing for the first time(for rifles) I would purchase a large, heavy, O frame press, a set of RCBS (chargemaster 1500) digital scales and a RCBS trimmer, and if I were fortunate enough to have a wee bit of spare I would also purchase a FORSTER priming tool.
Then I would decide whether to upgrade the scales to include the dispenser or purchase a powder thrower.
These items are once only purchases that would suffice for the next twenty to thirty years.

With your $500 budget you couldn't go wrong with the RCBS Rockchucker kit. IMHO RCBS has the best customer service in the rare event that you should need it, and their equipment will last you for your lifetime.
