Finally my first 338 lapua rig !!!!! Range report and pictures of targets Page 2!!!!!

Hmmm think up reactive targets to test 338 shooters. "evil hand rubbing icon here"
I have some ideas!
What method of load developement are you using bobjoe? Ladder or other.

What are you using for a rest? That could make a serious difference in group size.

A caldwield(sp?) The front bag has ears on it so I do need to get one with no ears and that should help. My bag bag is fine.

I assume it's called ladder.

So I went out to the range today and fired off a few more. This time I was at 500 yards.

The first group was 5 shot. If I counted my first 3 round it was a 3" group but the 5 rounds made it 5". Not bad for first time on paper at that range.

Second group of only 3 rounds (I didn't make enough) was 1.833. I will take a picture of it and post later. I don't know what that works out to in moa but I know it is good.

Pretty sure Moa at 500Yrds is 5 1/4" But I'm just new to this Long Range Game..

Gallon milk just filled with red or purple dyed water. :D

Ya tried that once. picking up all the pieces of the tomato can and plastic jugs is a pain. Tomato soup was the most fun, except for the clean up of the can fragments. I'm talking a lung shaped target that flops from side to side.
I will come up with some surprise to test the shooters, golf ball at 1000 wasn't that well recieved last sept.
Find the node for the gun/bullet/powder combo bobjoe. What do you figure to be the max distance for the up left in the scope after the mile?
2013 might see targets out to 3km. Might!!

Rumour has it that 408 components are hard to come by. My targets are happy!! 338 should have all that is needed to hit 3 km. I'm getting enough elevation in a base to lob 308 cal bullets to 2000 yds. I need to buy or inherit a milling machine.

I checked my scope and it seems that I only have about 49 moa?? With a 20 moa base it should be more. Unless they put it on backward hmmm. I might just get a 40 moa base and be over with it. That way I can reach out to 3 km. I have been looking for a local spot and I have one place that I can go and it is 2 miles long with nothing but trees for another 5 miles behind it.

I guess one reason why I would go 408 is my smith has a 40cal barrel sitting there and a reamer for it , would just need to find an action and start from there . As for the componants Rick at atrs lists brass and and bullets on his site . So the potential to shoot one by this fall could be very real if the wife didn't have me on lock down after my lapua came in

Hey Bobjoe, if you've got 49 mins up in your scope changing your 20 to a 40 min rail will only give you 69 mins or around 1800-1850 yards using your crosshairs depending on your reticle you might touch 2000.

I shoot a 338lm also and to get to 3000 yards still short of 3km i need 194 mins up.

Sounds like you have the spot you just need a f load more elevation.

I would strongly consider not building anything based on the 408 Cheytac casing seeing as all parties involved in the caliber are now history. That will mean difficulty in obtaining brass, which is a fairly important consideration in my books.

Being on a tight budget is the pits sometimes. Must go look at Peters Lapua brass selection!
