Finally.....Something Furry

Your first calling experience gets the blood going. Just wait till you hear a herd of deer crashing through the brush coming in you direction, makes you wonder if you aren`t a little under gunned.:p

I didnt realise by making that statement I was justifying shooting it? I dont need to justify it, it is perfectly legal, I am licensed and I have no qualms about killing a fox. I have killed lots of them and will continue to do so til I cant any longer. I dont hunt moose, caribou, bear , lion, elephant etc but I do not interfere or try to tell those who do they are "in the wrong" so to speak or get up in their face because they're personal choice of hunting is not the same as mine!! In case some of you holier than thow type hunters have forgotten....these like any other game animal are a renewable resource with seasons and limits set on them.:jerkit:

Geez! Relax, already. Read my post...I get it...I shoot'em too. You absolutely don't have to justify it, I agree totally...but when you describe it like an article from a 50-year-old issue of Outdoor Life magazine, that's the way it sounds, especially to an outsider. I certainly didn't mean to come across as "holier than thow" (sic).

Your initial post ("Finally...something furry") sounds as though this was something new for you. Later, you and your buddy have 200 foxes piled up. Whichever, it doesn't matter. But, like it or not, we're stuck in a world with a lot of people who don't like or agree with what we are doing, and some of them spend a lot of time and money swaying public opinion against us. If you jut out your chin and say "screw'em...I don't care what they think!" then you are sticking your head into the sand. All it takes is for enough voices to be raised against us to make the politicians realize "I know how to get all those votes...I'll just throw the hunters under the bus, and I'll be a hero to all these other whiny people!" When that happens, the only hunting we'll be doing is on the internet.

You're correct about the "renewable resource with seasons and limits set on them" idea. Who do you think sets those seasons and limits?

Not passing 'judgment' on anyone, but IMHO if there is edible meat to be taken from your kill, you should take it and eat it or give it to someone who will. If there is a pelt that can be taken and utilized, take it and use it or give it to someone who can. If there's a trophy to be taken, take it and display it proudly. If there's an overpopulation issue, then do your part to remedy it, again taking whatever can be used wherever possible.

Don't try and rationalize killing a predator just because its a predator and so, because it eats other animals, including animals that you happen to eat, that's somehow a reason for it to be killed. That's not conservation; its just dumb.

Hunt whatever you can, when you can, but there should always be some rational purpose for it. The moment you lose your rationale for hunting, you're prey for the antis and you can bet they will exploit it.

Seeking approval

I never said to waste. I said I will not seek approval for shooting a predator. I collect and sell the hides on predators. Got a cheque a few years ago that would pay for three rifles.

albertacoyotecaller, my post was not in response to anything you put up and for that matter, wasn't directed at anyone. (I thought I made that much clear). I don't even remember reading your particular post. But, in any event, if you're collecting and selling fur, that's great. Not that you need my approval or anyone else's.

You're lucky to have that deer, watch it, enjoy it, and leave it be. I sincerely doubt its causing problems around you house, and you're in its home, not the other way around.

Good shot if there is a season that gives you the reason, shoot away! They are not much of a target on the run!

Exactly what I was thinking, and have the same opinion for racoons, porcupines and skunks. When I was living in NE Sask, we had a family of foxes set up shop in our round bale stack. We left them be because they were healthy and pure hell on mice. OTOH, my friend used to breed Golden Retreivers and couldn't keep the fleas off them because of a family of foxes his Goldens used to play with.

Thanks , I'll take that as a compliment. I always thought it would be a cool job to be an outdoors writer and therein lies the entire point of the thread. To share a fun moment I had afield with other hunters.:)

No kidding , what a rush for sure. An entirely different experience than calling in a flock of geese. May have to go to a mouth call for predators to enhance the experience!:D

Raised: If you don't eat it don't shoot it,crows, ground hogs, coyotes, foxes a few of my favorites to hunt don't eat any off them.If the government of this great country sees fit to give me a season on varmints who am I to say no!!!I have a friend who has shot lots and lots of deer doesn't eat any of them, should he quit deer hunting???

Hey spank, nice kill! Great story and pic. I can't believe some of the posts here! This site has it's share of pinko liberals I suppose...
I shot a fox about a month ago that came to some mouse squeeks. Hit him at 72yds with the 22mag. They are a small target for sure. I plan on using this fox as a coyote decoy after the hide is tanned. Apparently coyotes will attack them on site.? Just one of those things I gotta try for myself.;)

Congratulations......nice looking fox. Thats a cool idea, may have to try that myself. Unfortunately the one I got was pretty messed up on the one side but we managed to skin him out and my buddy says he can make use of whats left for a little fur trim on a custom set of boots! And yes the 22 mag would be a better option for sure. Somebody mentioned using fmj's in my 22-250 but I prefer not to shoot them as my limited experience with them has shown that most kills are not instantaneous and I hate to see anything suffer. I much prefer a clean quick kill.
