I have himmed and hawed and wondered and worried about what scope to put on my Ruger #1H in 405 Winchester. I finally decided to go with my first thought on the matter, so I bought another Leupold -- this time a VX-II in 2-7X33. Should be just what the doctor ordered for ranges of 200 yards and under.

I took it to the range and it zeroed very easily. The first three shots for group at 100 metres were very nice. Two through the same hole and the third very close.

Anyway, here's the picture of the rifle and scope with some factory Hornady Flat Points on the right, and some 300 gr RN home cast bullets on the left. What a real treat to shoot this rifle. Now if I can just talk myself into a #1V. :D

Thanks, fellas. This was a number of desires rolled into one. I have wanted a number one for years. And I have wanted a big bore for years. I did not want a 458 WM or the like. I wanted something different. I looked at a 416 Rigby, and after weighing the costs of components, the recoil factor, and how much I would actually shoot it, I went for the historical round.

The 405 is a real good shooter. It can be stretched a bit in the #1, and velocities of 2400 are not hard to get with a 300 grainer. Some claim velocities in the range of 2600, but I think that is a little high. The factory stuff should hit like "the hammer of Thor" that someone mentioned.

I have loaded some 41 mag pistol bullets with a light charge of AA5744, and I think those will work good for grouse and rabbits. :D Am looking forward to hunting with it this year. I'll try to downsize my target picture and put it up, but I am pretty dumb on computers.
