finally spotted dem dam yotes! need a few tips.

Okay Im a new hunter but my determination paid off. ive been looking for a coyote every single day for 2 weeks, i used my phone as a caller first week but i think it was too quite and recently learned illegal, so i switched to just stalking and howeling back to locate them. FINALLY! it worked. I had a shot at about 300meters last night but other side was unknown so i couldnt take the shot. tonight i plan on trying again in a different position.

My question is since they seen me (was in middle of a field walking back home when i seen them) will they avoid the same route?

Do coyotes often use the same nightly route? (7:00-8:00pm)

Do you guys hunt them without calls? or do you maybe use voice calls?

I dont want to loose my chance today... rifle is zeroed perfectly, wind seems to be the same today which is good just want to improve me chances.

my hideing will be on top of an old container to get them comming at me, or behind a big bush and rock in the middle of a field to get them from the side as they pass (harder shot than from container)

any suggestestions would be great! im so excited!

Unless you're repeatedly busted by the same coyotes in that same area/route, I don't think they will associate it with danger in the long run. They have more other pressing concerns, i.e. conserving energy, finding prey, etc.

I think this depends a lot on your terrain and how large their territory is. Around here, it tends to be huge, so relying on a daily route will offer very low returns. If the territory is smaller, the likely routes are much more predictable.

There are advantages to both (lots of threads on this), and I will use both from time to time. If you're in a high density area for coyotes, a hand (voice) call can be easily just as productive.

Trying to get a shot as they pass sounds risky when it comes to playing the wind. I would instead look for a position that offers maximum visibility (opportunity) while also consistent with the wind direction.

They have many of the advantages in your contest. Stealth, keen senses (a fantastic nose, excellent hearing and eyes tuned for the slightest movement), and an awesome survival instinct. Yours, on the other hand, are limited largely to the reach of your rifle. So your goal - in a nutshell - is to try and minimize their advantages while maximizing your own. Their behaviour is predictable, to a point. So you work the wind direction, keep your movement to a minimum, offer the calls you think they want to hear, and be ready to respond at a moment's notice. I know it all sounds very generalized, and it is, but you can boil it down for your particular circumstances, and the same basic tenets will hold true.

i think coyotes in this area usually stick to a small area and dont travel very long distances. I could be wrong ofcoarse.

Im in southwestern ontario. I will try and get some footage tonight and ket you guys know how it went.
 
Not sure, but wouldn't they have pups at the moment it being spring and all? Kinda seems a bit cruel to risk shooting mama when there's a chance of leaving the pups to starve. Not saying that there aren't times or reasons (I.e., poses actual safety risk to pets, livestock or people), just wondering whether why it's necessary to shoot any animal at any time and just because?

And please, none of the "because it's fun to kill thing just because I can" or "there is no reason for this 'pest' to live"... That doesn't really fly with me as I have no issue with honoring the food chain, but do not taking killing anything lightly nor am I so arrogant to believe that all creatures (however tasty some might be) don't have their place in nature.


Again, I am not against hunting for food or humanely dispatching an animal that is mortally wounded/ill or posses a genuine (rather than perceived) risk, so please don't flame me since I'm not dissing hunting... Just curious.:)

The morality and ethics issues aside, pups don't appear around here till early May. I expect its still too early for pups in most places.

When you say "appear" does that mean "are spotted outside of the den" or "are born?" Wouldn't they be born and holed up in their den for at least a little while before the "appear" in the open? If that is the case, in your example, the pups would be around (holed up in their den) before early May when you spot them. Again, just wondering.

GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!
So as i predicted the wind was perfect, i was setup in the tree... heard em howling and waited. I spotted one comming towards me about 400 yards away, it got to 300 yards and stopped looked back and started slowly walking back, i thought maybe it spotted me so i made the standard "whoop!!" yell and it stopped... BANG!!! ... farckin miss... then what suprised me was it started bolting towards me as it didnt know what happened... i took another shot but as u can imagine yotes are fast and i missed again... he didnt give me another chance.... turns out the reason it probably turned back was to see where his pup was because it followed mom or dad into the bush. I didnt really want to kill the teenager as i felt i didnt deserve to with my pathetic display of marksmanship.

I have it all on GO PRO but its not something i want to share lol... maybe ill post it up when I kill one.

now they definetally wont use the same route! ill give them a day off and check back friday.
 
If your looking for a cheap ecaller to buy look at the Johnny Stewart Predator Two caller. I got mine off ebay for like 45 bucks to my door. Called in a few yotes with it. It aint the loudest caller, but it works.

Addiction is correct, I go every single day. Im probably on day 25 or so. the first two weeks I was seeing if I could hunt deer. But I would just stalk them and see if I can get a shot, get them in my scope and just yell "BANG YOUR DEAD" it was always funny seeing them run for their lives after. Deer are too easy. It when i started noticing lots of coyote tracks... but never actually seeing one that they began to interest me.

Also what do you think my chances are in that place again? they seem to be howling in the same spot (two nights in a row) and using the same route.... but today I definetally scared and alerted them... what should my next move be?

He came from the north following the path then ran to the left of me to point 1. (lol i dono why i drew this using characters but it worked pretty well)
im gonna try the bushes next time I think.

Yes hunting coyotes is a lot of fun and frustrating as well !! Just to let you know deer are out of season and all tho your not hunting them exactly it's still illegal to do that. I don't know what it's called exactly but it's something like bothering an animal. It's the same as looking for animals at night with spotlights just to see what's around. I know it seems harmless but your better off taking a camera with you and don't scare the crap out of them they do remember. And next year when you are allowed to shoot them they won't be there. Just a friendly suggestion

flamborough area, I never knew that. But thats dufficult to prove, although a way out there example if i sat in a tree waiting for yotes, thought i seen one...scoped it, realized it was a deer then farted from a mixture flatuate inducing materials i ingested earlier that day, and the deer got spooked then i cant see how that law would apply. not saying your wrong just that law seens to be more for people that are hunting deer and then say their not. I could possibly get in trouble but difficult to prove. then again CFO does what he wants. I only did this on private land so different laws may apply.

Can you try to find the regulation? that shoukd clear it all up

The only reason I know that is I was talking to my local CO about spotlighting deer at night on my property to get a count. He said that is illegal to do. And any act that disturbs an animal other than when hunting is as well. But he said as you did very hard to prove. Not to mention you want to keep animals around on your property not scare them
