I've been hunting deer on my Fiancee's family land for the past 6 years now. She partly owns a dairy farm and a patato plantation with her parents and 2 brothers. Our hunting grounds are 900 yards behind my house wich was built on the farm in '07. I live on the north shore of Montreal, about 45 minutes away from the city. We and the neighbors grow cabbage and potatoes but for deer what is very interesting is that we also grow carrots, soya, alphalpha and corn.... Thare are fields, hardwood and swamps..... We hunt a 240 acres area...

First 2 years were very succesfull but the last 3 deer seasons were pretty s**tty. Harsh winters in 2007 and 2008 and too many 'yotes ! In the last 2 years, 6 Cototes were put down and the last 2 winters were less difficult for them.

This year, black powder season is very promising. We see more rubs now than we ever saw in the 5 years prior to that put together. At my spot, there are 4 rubs within 50 yards... some are HUGE ! ! ! ! Last sunday, without looking we encountered 9 rubs and about 5-6 scrapes while repositionning treestands (we had setup for bow but didn't get the chance to go as I now have a 2 month old daughter)........ tracks are all over the place !

I've also notices that coyote are less present this year than in the past 3. Shows to me that things a cyclick.

Farm life is A1++++.. on top of that, I'm on a 7-1/2 month parental leave.....5 more months to go ! ! !

Here are a few samples of the ''signs'' I am talking about.......

It would be interesting for you to put up a trail cam or two .

Things are looking up in certain parts of Ontario too....not sure if its the predator cycle or the great winter and fall we had last year. Im counting down the days for my deer hunt starting on the 15th.

I'd say you have more than 1 buck working the area. That pic of your boot in, I don't think is a scrape. A scrape would be right down to the dirt. Usually with a hoof print in it and an overhanging licking branch. I wouldn't be putting up treestands overlooking his rubs. "what are your chances of him returning there?" Find a scrape line, set up nearby, as close to an escape route for him as possible. Good luck with your hunting.

We followed his ''rub trail'' last week. Setup 3 treestands along it, 2 in the woods another on the ridge of a soya field (My spot). Since last sunday they (I also believe ther is more than one) added 9 more rubs in the trail between the first and last treestand. The pic with my boot in it is a scrape, we (Not on the pic though) clearly see tracks in it and what the pic don't show is the licking branch about 5 feet over it. Last sunday is was about 12 inches... it is now 24 inches wide.

As stated in the first post, that is the most activity we've seen on the past 6 years..... always along the same trail....

Time will tell...

Just be very aware of what the wind is doing before getting into your stand. If it's not right, don't hunt it. Looks like you've got a good spot - Good luck, I hope you get him!
