Finding new boots frustration!

Scarpas are my fav but you need to have skinny feet for them to be comfortable I would imagine.

I don’t know if you need mountaineering boots for an elk hunt

No you are probably right, I could probably get by with my Danner. However a lot of the areas I like to hunt here in Ontario are steep and rocky and I would like a stiffer pair of boots for at home as well.

No judgement intended. I just meant if you are replacing your boots I don’t know if it’s necessary to buy a boot designed for mountaineering from any of the mentioned brands. I think you would bw happy with a hiking/backpacking offering from scarpa for example.

I would be hesitant to buy any boots without trying them on no matter how good they are on paper.

I have been using Kenetrek boots for 13 years now and they have been great. They come in a variety of styles to meet your needs and provide great ankle support.
They also have regular and wide widths.
Best to try on before you buy, so that you get the best fit for your feet.

What model?

The Canada pro 3000. These are stiff heavy duty boots but are built better than Lowa and Hanwag ime.
I take a 11.5 in Danner and have both the 11.5 and 12 in the Meindls. The 11.5 are a bit too small so I would suggest a half size larger in the Meindls. Both Mendel boots have superfeet insoles in them

Dang, I watched a program on PBS I think where a guy goes around to different places mainly in Ontario where they make things by hand and one place was a boot manufacturer where they take your measurements and then make a custom pair of boots for about the same price as a lot of upper end boots you can but in stores and they can customize them for ankle support etc. When I saw it I thought, if my Meindls boots ever wear out I’d got to these but now I can’t find the info. Maybe someone else knows. What I do know is custom made anything is usually much better

I second the Meindls .... I am at my 4th pair of the Meindl Island ... and every pair lasts me around 10 years of heavy use and hiking.

But nobody carries them around here ... you need to book a boot shopping trip to Germany ... and to be able to try them on ... and bring a pair back.

No need to go all the way to Germany , take a trip to Campbell River and stop in at River Sportsman. Last I was there they sell Meindle boots.

I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. I’ve never needed to break in Hanwags and have even bought them on the way to the trail head because of this. That being said though I know everyone’s feet are different.

What I do, do for every new pair is peel back the top of the rand and re-glue it along with gluing the seams along the top and bottom of the rand all the way around using gear aid, aquaseal. Seems to be a decent enough glue and holds up to constant shale pretty well. After glueing, waterproof your boots as normal.
