Gents,

Need some advise. I am looking for an offroad/utility vehicle. I have three kids, my wife and myself. Oldest is 12 years old. I am an avid hunter, particularly bowhunting. I am looking to get something to help me access areas of crown land and cover rough terrain. Also for hauling gear and recovering game. I want to make the hunting trips, with my two boys and occasionally my young daughter, fun and exciting.

I currently own a 4x4 Suburban. I was thinking a 8 wheeled Argo might fit the bill and be fun but the offroad thread in the survival forum got me thinking about other options. A fast attack dune buggy was my second thought but I don't have a mini gun to kit it out properly.... :)

I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks

Jeff

This is the argo configuration I was thinking:

The Argo is nice, but you could pick up an old K-5 Blazer or Jimmy for pretty cheap and it'd go pretty much anywhere you want. I carry 4 guys, equipment, and multiple dead deer in mine!:D

For a hunting vehicle, the Argo is the way to go.
It's not the best looking way to get to where you want to go, but it is the most practical. It's amphibious, almost impossible to get stuck, and you can put tracks on it during the winter. You can also use an Argo with ATV implements if you want to plant food plots for deer, or tow trailers.

If you're looking for something for fun as well as work, look at ATVs. A 4-wheeler is a blast, and if you take out the amphibious part, almost as practical as an argo. They're also a lot easier to find. A 6-wheel ATV has negligable benefits over a 4 wheeler. Because they have a lower center of gravity, they're harder to tip than a 4-wheeler, but because they weigh a lot more, if you do tip one over, it's a 2-man job to right, and you have a way higher chance of hurting yourself. The onloy benefit to a 6-wheeler is the cargo box. However, that can be a double-edged sword. If you have enough weight in the box, it lifts the front tires off the ground to prevent the steering from working on loose soil/gravel/mud. Even with weight on the front rack, a 200lb deer & your geer in the rear box will make steering a chore. Just to give you an idea, I wiegh about 225lbs, and was recently driving a 6-wheeler with no weight on the front, & about 250lbs in the back. On pavement, moving slowly, I turned the wheels as far to the left as I could, and drove straight.

UTVs are another option I would stay away from. Aside from looking absurd, they take all of the problems of an ATV, and all of the problems of using a truck for off-roading, and combine them. Aside from being able to sit beside your hunting buddy, I have yet to see a UTV do ANYTHING better than an ATV. The kicker is they cost as much as 1.5 quads.

Finally, the fast attack dune buggy. As fun as they are, they're really just not worth it without the mini-gun, but once you get the gun & all the ammo loaded on, you only get 10kms to a tank, and the thing's practically bottomed out. You could try the one with the TOW missile system, but it drains your battery. It does make recovering game a lot easier. Less like tracking & more like picking up after a pinyata. A pinyata that's been hit by a missile. :p

We run an 8 wheel argo with a closed in solid cab which lets us load up the top, we haul 4 guys and a whole bunch of gear (we also pull a trailer) . Its not the fastest way around but its best one for us. BTW it also runs great all winter with the tracks.

argos rule. Taken them thru spots I would not even consider taking a 4 -wheeler.
Across swamps up very steeeeep hills etc. They have a very low center of gravity sothey are very very stable. plus you can carry the whole family and lots of gear. only problem is they do not fit in the back of a truck. but just use a trailer....

I am going to have a serious look at the argo. It seems to be the best option for the clan.....for those who have one...any suggestions on the must have equipment on it like a winch....etc...

The argo will carry a big load, and will cross many different kinds of terrain, however they are very rough riding,so you have to go much slower than a quad in rough terrain. They are also not great in deep snow, even with tracks installed.
