I got my first deer with a ML this year, TC White Mountain Carbine with a conical, but I want to move to a long barrel patch and ball gun, same sort of gun you have there.
Can you tell me where you got the kit and how much fitting/work actually has to be done? What Calibre is it?

It is a 50 caliber. It is the Kentucky kit from Tradition Muzzleloaders. You should be able to order from any gun shop. I did and it only cost me just a little over $300. There is some fitting and work involved but I had lots of fun with it. I sent the barrled to my gunsmith to get the barrel rust browned. That was the only problem I had with it, couldn't get the plum brown to stick right. The wood working aspect was really easy, the brass was easy to fit to the gun stock. I used the Birchwood and Casey wood finishing kit and that was not hard to do at all.

Is it a .50 or .54? If it's a .50 you'll have to try different ball diameters and patch thickness for best accuracy.Try a .490 ball and .015" patch with 80gr FFG. Use real black powder if you can get it.I had hangfires with 777 in a .54 and I'll tell you that's no fun with heavy hunting charges!Pillow ticking can be obtained from various sourses ie: Walmart,sewing shops and E-Bay.Check out the Black powder forum for my patch lube recipe [moosemilk].........Harold

I ordered it from the Shooters supply. You can probably order it from from any gun shop. It is the Tradions Kentucky rifle kit

No he has been closed for awhile now. Bought it from the Shooters Supply, just outside of Kurtzville.
Finished my muzzleloader, It was was a Traditons Kenucky muzzleloader kit. It has a 1-66 inch twist, ball and patch only. Pretty happy with the way it turned out. Let me know what you think

Very nice. I did one of those up almost 20 years ago. That 2-piece stock is something, isn't it? Mine was a .45 cal; I understand they are all .50's now, no .54's either. Yours has much nicer wood than I did. I ordered a patchbox from a catalogue for mine. THAT was a job, inletting that. I hope your gun shoots well; mine was horrid for accuracy. Too bad, the light recoil of the .45 roundball made it a practical small game rifle. I love the weight of these guns, it's about half the weight of my .54 flinter!
I gave mine away to a friend to hang on his wall. It's too bad that there are so few kits available now. Back before the modern muzzleloader took over the sport, I bet half the BP shooters built their guns from kits.
