so this past November i got it into my head that i needed a bolt action varmint rifle so i picked up a savage model 25 off the EE.
it is a great gun in every way but one, bolt lift is so heavy that it made staying on target when re-cocking the rifle almost impossible in any position. from what i have read it is due to the 60 degree bolt turn. so this left me rather unsatisfied and for a bit i even considered selling the rifle. instead i decided to add some length to my knob and toyed with a few ideas before i decided on this one, mostly because im kind of impatient about waiting for things to be made or delivered and a lot broke.
first off im sorry about the poor quality as i have been using my phone to take all my pictures laity
i have no before picture as i had already fired up the grinder before i thought i might post this on here but its a fairly generic round bolt
i started off by grinding down the original bolt knob as close as i could to fit in a 14mm socket(and this is the point most of you realize im a crazy red neck
)
next i ground down the ratchet end of the socket and found a careage bolt to cap it
then i picked up a package of cold weld for 7 bucks and started putting it together origanly i was going to weld it then use the epoxi just to help make it look less like a socket welded on a bolt handle but decided it wasn't worth it.
i did a total of 5 layers waiting about 8 min between each
then after an hr of letting it cure i fired up my belt sander and started to shape it into something presentable i finished with 150 then 220 grit hand sanding
all finished and on the gun it looks a little out of place but i dont think the yotes, or more often milk jugs, will mind
it is 100X better its only about 1/2 an inch longer but it give me a lot more leverage and with the extra surface it is allot more comfortable to cycle quickly and im sure it will help with cold fingers in winter gloves
