Hi everyone,

Well I haven't refurbed a No4 in a while, so I thought it'd be just about time.

The barrel, receiver and bolt are number-matching - but that's after an "FTR" at Fazakerley (unfortunately not dated on the receiver). Got them as a sporterized rifle with no magazine. Good shape 5-groove barrel.

The forend for this one, I got about a year ago from Trade Ex. Yes it has the "Ishy" screw... oh well I don't see it as a sore spot. It does have nice waves of different shades in the middle, which is neat. Bedding was not too challenging. Besides removing a few minor contact spots between the barrel and the forend, I had to slightly shim at the rear, under the rearmost part of the receiver, to get the right upward pressure at the muzzle.

I didn't do the best job possible on matching the color of the rear handguard with the other parts, I'm not satisfied with this; I will do better next time!

Wood was finished with BLO.

Can't wait to see how it shoots...

Lou

I'm no expert on Lee-Enfields but does the part of the stock, between the rear band and the receiver, suppose to have "etches" in it on both sides ?

IIRC the "grooved" handguard was an early version, and the "smooth" ones arrived slightly later - I could very well be wrong though! So a proper "FTR'ed" No4 probably shouldn't have that version? But, that's the one I had here! :D

Very nice Enfield Lou but I must as always make a slight Enfield-Red Green Show technical comment.

Tie the rear sling swivel to your belt and then walk around your yard dragging the Enfield until the finish on the sight protector, upper band and lower band match the front of the rifle.

You will need several rolls of duct tape to do this properly. ;)

Sorry Lou, the devil made me do it, do not get mad, FTRed rifles were “rebrowned” and repainted.

P.S. Some of your cheaper home made Canadian booze might remove bluing if you like that aged affect look. :D

That's a sweet looking old girl you have there, Lou.
I'm almost done my first SMLE restoration that I had been consulting with you on.
A couple more parts on her and I'll post some pics.
Thanks again for your help on it.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Bigedp, I hear you! :D Actually, I may either paint the tips of the forend / front handguard, or find the bands that match. I may go that last way, since the receiver is missing quite a bit of the FTR paint - I don't know, I'll think about it.

LE41, the handguards were used, so it was easy to adjust the width. New ones, you're right, often have lots of "excess material" and need more work!

Glad to hear that bck. Can't wait for the pics! :)

Another great work!

I often wonder if you should have your own marking stamp to indicate the love and attention you have brought back to these rifles? I would be proud to one day own a rifle that has LTP stamped alongside of the FTR :Dmarking.

Well done!
That is one beautiful looking No.4, nicely done restoration.

Any chance that you have any "BEFORE" photos that yo could post?

Cheers,
Brad

It does look good Lou. As for the "Ishy screw", I personally don't have a problem with them. They are a legitimate addition to the stock. They are also a good idea. I'm surprised that other countries didn't adopt the practice.

From what I can gather, the slotted rear hand gaurds were retained, if they were in good condition and were even used as replacements right up to the end if available.

GREAT!
Looks like Savage wood to me.
However my eyes ain't so good and you're on the other side of the rock from me so.....
