Finishing a wounded Grizzly with a knife

I'm with Ardent on this one, if it occurred as stated in the story, the bear didn't have use of its hind legs and therefore wasn't thrashing about which would allow them to hold on. The only person that could hold on to a big bear's thrashing hind legs imho is Chuck Norris, but him grabbing the bear would have killed it immediately anyway.

That or the crock from Lake Placid.

This is what would happen in reality if the bear had use of his hind legs.

It wasn't James Hector. As a side note, others who were supposed to have been there contradict his story of being kicked by a horse and waking up in the grave that had been dug for him.

I know two things, there have always been people doing incredible things and there have always been BS Artists. Without a time machine and a trip back to an August day in the 1870's near the confluence of Stony Creek and the Bow River, it's impossible to know. I believe the story with the caveat that the bear didn't have the use of it's hind legs. I also think it likely that the bear succumb to the gunshot.

Having wrestled a few wild animals in my life (2 and 4 legged) I'm seeing some difficulty in getting your hands around the hind leg of a grizzly, never mind holding onto those legs if it wants to get free......
Wasn't there so I could be wrong. Maybe. Doubtful.

Bear was shot wih a .366 Wagner and he finished it with a knife while he was paddeling a canoe down a brisk current wih a moose aboard.

Nice side thrust kick, very tae kwon do ish with the good rotation on the base leg with the base heel pointed towards the target, leaning into the target instead of away from it, nice hip commitment and the kick is middle level into the body not upwards and scuffing. The bear should be looking towards the opponent more but that may be due to a Bruce lee style counter rotation of the upper body during side thrust kick.

Oh look! An eagle!

Notice how the bear does the "Ali Shuffle".

I dunno, the key point I think is that the bear was swimming while the 2 men had their feet firmly on the bottom. No one calls BS that Akeley and Cottar killed leopards with their hands.

A leopard and a man are similar in weight, a small grizzly can weigh as much as a man, but 10X as much if large. Points to consider are the size of the bear, the seriousness of its wound, and the honesty of the author.
