I just finished making a couple of muzzle breaks and a fake silencer for my AR out of aluminum. Other than anodizing, is there a durable finish I can apply to aluminum, since thats what there made from. I tried airbrushing a flat black enamel paint. It looked really good but it comes off real easy:( . Not what I had in mind. I don't have any where to anodize these parts without spending a good bit of cash which kind of defeats the purpose of making them myself.

Powder coating works well on aluminum. Most shops will do a small batch for their minimum price which is usually $100. You may be able to get your parts added into a run they are doing in the colour you want if you are willing to wait for them to do another run.

You can use paint on aluminum but you have to buy a special primer first otherwise the paint will just flake off. The other option is anodizing before you paint....but if you're going to anodize it....theres not really much point in painting it after.

Talk to some local machine shops and see if they have any batches of aluminum going to be anodized. Or you can talk directly to an anodizing shop and see what kind of deal they can give you.

A fellow nutz member, Ardent, does gun parts anodizing. He said to me before he usually does a batch or two in the Springtime when enough parts have acumulated to make it worthwhile.
You can contact him to ask.

anadizing aluminium

it's easy to do. battery acid, battery charger and the
JIFFY BRAND of felt pen ink refill. forget about useing
RITZ fabric dye. here is a peep site for my RUGER M77
so i can wipp the scope of and install peep sight for
the iron sight class. it is 1 inch aluminium .058 wall tube
and the screww om fittings are aluminium as well.
the fittings are finished with 320 grit paper and are
shinny, while the tybe i glass bead and it looks more like
the parkerized finnish.

Thanks guys. I'll try crappy tire first and if that doesn't work out I'll give the gun kote a try. I had read a thread about gun kote but thought it was only for steel.

Neat idea there!!:D

^^

Yes, Jbunny's annodizing is top notch. I had a chance to check out the pictured tube sight last week and the finish is great, very nice contrast between the bead blasting and the polished pieces. I'm definitely going to check out his set up. I have a few things I am going to try refinishing when I get set up.

jbunny, or someone....

Can you explain the process used in a little more detail? The sight tube looks great, but I'm more interested in how it was coated and the process with the acid, charger and felt pen.

Thanks

do a google serch anodizing aluminium at home.
i use 2 parts batt acid 1 part water in a 4 inch plastic
sewer pipe. roll up a peice of aluminium roof flashing
and slide it in the pipe for your groung. where nitrile
gloves as not to leave any figerprint oil on your part.
15 min in the acid with the charger hooked up. take out,
rinse in cold water, blow dry with commpresed air, brush
on the jiffy ink color you want, wait i5 min, then put the part in a pan of boiling water and boil for 20 min to seal
the dye in. burrnish with fine steel wool and your done.
note some say to use ritz fabric dye but i had it work once in 6 times. the jiffy ink refill dye works every time for me.
good luck. Lou
