Evening Gents,

I have just come from dissassembling my Finnish M-27 with some effort. The rear band screw was installed crooked into the rifle and someone hammered it in previous to me owning it. Took a punch and pliers to remove it, and I need to obtain a new screw for it. Can anyone hook me up or suggest a source? Once again, this is a rear barrel band screw for a Finnish M-27. I am going to see if I can straighten it in vice grips but the metal is surprisingly soft for steel and I don't want to mar it too badly.

Thanks!

Here is the picture. This is how it came out, I did NOT bend it.

Suggestions?

Hi

If it was me, I would take a block of steel (Doesn't have to be big) Drill a hole and tap it to the corerect size you need. I would them screw it in as much as I could and tap the screw with a hammer in the opposite direction the bend it, screw the bolt in as it get closer to being straight. It's not a load bearing screw, so it should not be hardened. cAs for cleaning up the screw head, use a small fine file to get the burrs off and put the screw head in a drill press or a drill and turn it using some 120 grit sand paper. Touch up with some oxo blue.

Hmmm.... I see. Thanks for the advice but sadly I do not have access to most of that equipment. I was considering using my school's shop to put it in a vice and gently tapping it straight, followed by some sandpaper as you mentioned and possibly using a small file to deepen the screw slot, as it was a little stripped when I removed it. Why did they make these screws so soft?

Even easier - Canadian Tire sells a "Thread Pitch Gauge" (Google it, take too long to explain here) Find out what pitch the thread is (only need three threads to establish this so measure where the threads are still straight), purchase the appropriate nut (the deeper the nut the better - hopefully not a machine thread). Tighten the nut into a vice and VERY gently start the screw. WD40 and lots of patience are your friends.

Looking at your pictures the business end of the screw looks like it could still start but a little love with a jewler's or small triangle/thread file wouldn't hurt.

You should be out about $10-$15 when all is said and done.
