Hello All,

I am headed out to the range tomorrow and would like to be 1,000,000% sure that my Finnish M-39 can take the Czech 1989 Military ball ammo. Are the barrels made to .311 or to .308 diameter in the barrel's rifling? I know the M-27 Finnish rifles have to be "D" marked. My M-39 has no such markings. The bore is a little worn on it.

Thanks,
Drachenblut

Only M28's and M28/30's shold ever be seen with the .308 bores, and not always. You would have to slug one.

M39's are all .311" from the factory.

You don't need to do it right now, but for the time it takes you should slug everything you own. I stole a handful of 00 shot from a buddy. Fishing weights of the appropriate size also work fine. A little grease and a set of calipers and you know what you need to know in less than 3 minutes per rifle, including running a patch after to clear the residual grease from the bore.

There is a post on another forum that clearly shows a slug with a mark from a burr in a rifle that was counter bored. He couldn't figure out why his 100m groups were so poor...

And if you're going to continue collecting stuff chambered in 7.62x54r you're going to need to start reloading soon anyway =)

When I get my M-27 though, I will have to slug the bore correct? I am pretty sure they were .308 bore.

I googled the bore info. It's all here: ht tp://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinSpec.htm

All finnish "barreled" rifles have a .3095" bore except for the M39 wich was made to be compatable wit the Russin ammo with a bore dia of .310"

Regards

Pete

Thanks. I shot my M-39 today, a little working around and was getting 4 inch groups at 150 yards on her irons freehand. Not bad. I will slug the bore, got the equipment today. Deltasilver, do you have a link or can post that information from that forum?

One thing I should note is this: The bore on my Finn must be tight as when I fired 25 rounds down her, she got REALLY fouled. Took me 25 patches to clean her up.

Thats powder residue stuck in the pits. Wait till you fire 100 through it in one sitting. Many, many, patches will it take to clean her good. A rifle with a mint bore will usually clean up in as few as 5 patches ( with some brush work).

What he said ;)

surplusrifle.com also has a nice little guide.

Regarding the barrel fouling - That's a neat rifle you have there. I "share" a 1915(I think =/) New England Westinghouse Mosin with my dad and it has the same issue. We roll our own fairly underpowered cast lead loads now, and it really saves on the cleanup and wear&tear on the rifle.

Save the green cased stuff for the carbines :D

Well I attempted to slug the bore on my M-38 Mosin to practise. WHAT A DISASTER. I ended up punching THROUGH the lead and then my wooden dowel broke, and then I had to destroy a perfectly good cleaning rod to hammer the whole mess out. Once that was done, took me tonnes of patches and electrolisis cleaning to rid the mess of all the lead. What went wrong? It seems the lead caught on the inner lip of the counterbore... I used tonnes of grease and lots of care. The little lead that did come out did tell me I had a .286 bore. :p Aw well. Maybe I will try again. I know. An epic failure.

I forgot to mention that you will shave some lead off when you pound the bullet weight down the barrel from the muzzle end. When I slugged from 88/05, the outer edge of the bullet weight shaved right off and, at first, I thought my cleaning rod was being peeled. It was an up-nerving experience but luckily, I never punched through my lead piece (thankfully).

I did mine from the chamber to muzzle... I've never had an issue.

Fishing weight or 00 buck?

I used a little White Lithium grease (mostly 'cause that's what I had handy) on the slug and pushed it through with a black-powder tamping rod. They just fall out the end with a hint of the rifling pattern on the sides.

I'll whip up a video in the next few days - do 'er @ work where the light's better.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out =/
