Fire Forming 9.3 x 57

...a lot of people form 9.3 x 57 from 8 x 57

...seems like some use 30-06 casings

...since i don't have 8mm but have a whack load of 06 i just wanted to ask how to do this using filler

...the shoulder on the 06 casing needs to be set back by 1/10"...it won't chambre as is

...then following that starting at 10% of case capacity load a medium-burning powder...insert spacer...fill with filler (cream of wheat) to bottom of neck...and seal and fire...may need to adjust up from there

...will that do it?

...oh and i have to trim the case length by 2/10"

...can i use unique powder?

You will need to turn the necks thinner if using 06 brass.

Unique will work fine. About 12 grains or so will do the job just right.
You may or May not have to turn those necks, since expanding out to
.366 will thin the brass somewhat. Depends a bit on the 30-06 brass you are using.
If I were doing this, I would trim to 57mm before fire-forming.

Who makes bullets that expand at x57 speeds? I was reading an article on ballistic studies (I think it was) and they mention that most .366 bullets are designed for x62 and x74r speeds and are unreliable in the x57. Anyone care to comment on this?

Also, I thought people were using - 06 cases for x62 not x57?

The 270gr Speer 9.3 bullet works very well on big game in the '57 as well as the'62. Here's one from a moose shot at something less than 100 yd.

I chose the simpler route. Buy the 8x57 brass and run it through the 9.3x57 resizing die. Requires good lubricant and significant force I found.

When reforming 8X57 brass, I neck up to 40 cal first, then resize to crush fit the case in the chamber. The bolt should just barely close on the case. That way, you have a perfect fit in the chamber, and will not stretch the brass. I have also used '06 brass a few times, and they did not need neck turning.

I always used full power hunting loads to form brass while sighting and practicing with the rifle. The 9.3X57 is a fine hunting round for big game, and forty cases will last you a long time.

Very nice. Any idea how fast those are leaving the barrel in your x57?

Edit: Correction, Suther, that would have been the impact velocity. The muzzle velocity on the load averages 2380.

...if the 06 brass doesn't work out well then i will fall back on the 8mm brass and may do that anyway...but want to give the 06 a try first more out of curiosity than anything

need to work on some loads for emma 9.3x57 ... speer is certainly the answer.

I've been wanting something that's big and slow, and I've been eyeing this particular caliber for a while. When I read the article saying most bullets in this cal don't open reliably at x57 speeds (factory loads are 2100fps or so for 286gr pills i think?) but apparently this is a cartridge capable of more than that...

honestly with the tests i did so far (still not over) i will avoid only the hornadys for the 9.3x57 and of course the too strong heavy bullets. but there is a lot of good choice. PRVI is another one.

9.3x57 is not orpthan at all.

...it's from trade...it was in really nice shape...the wood had no issues but it needed a refinishing and recoil pad replacement for the one that had been cobbled on, literally...metal was near-mint...so i'm just waiting for some loads to test it out...and i like big slow moving cartridges

The closest I have to big and slow is my Enfield... And it's mostly just slow lol although it is bigger than the 270 I usually carry... And the idea of having such an uncommon cartridge intrigues me.

...well i spent last night figuring this out more to prove to myself that i could turn a 30-06 case into a 9.3x57...and i did

...but i'm just going to save myself all the gyrations that went into this and buy a bag of 8x57
