Hey guys,
Just got my PAL and I'm looking for somewhere in the ottawa valley or the city itself. I would rather go to a store then buy online so that I can handle the fire arm before I buy. Also any advice about first firearms is welcomed.

Thanks,
Jesse

Lebarons in Ottawa.
I think everyone else has closed the doors or have a few old .22's or 30-30's on the rack and everything else is fishing and camping gear. The internet has killed the old small time business dealers.

What do you like to shoot, pistol, rifle or shotguns?

Sail in the Ottawa Trainyards has a nice selection of rifles & shotguns. Lots of ammo too, with decent prices on some of it. Stittsville range has a gunshop also, but only open 1 day a week in the Winter I believe. There are some places on the Quebec side too. Gunsmith Jason Spencer usually has some used firearms to sell.

Regards,

George

Madawsaka Outdoors in Barry's Bay (used to be Home Hardware) at the corner of Hwys 60 & 62 have a good selection of firearms, bows, crossbows etc.

Perkins in Pembroke on Pembroke St West have firearms - including handguns.

There's also valley guns in Petawawa. (Also Perkins but avoid that place at all costs, prices are high and the owner was rude to me on several occasions. On the other hand if you don't want to be ID'ed for ammo go there)

X2. When I was in there a couple of years ago they had a nice selection of rifles, shotguns and AR type firearms.

They are on average (for cheaper guns) $100-200 more than other places including Valley Guns in town. My biggest annoyance with them was when I was talking to the owner trying to find out if he could get a certain model shotgun in. He picked up the phone while talking to me and called a friend about something completely unrelated. Also, I was new to shooting when I went there and they used high pressure sales tactics. He told me I didn't want the gun I was asking about and offered something completely different. I mentioned the gun was $200 cheaper online and he offered to knock $100 off if I bought it on the spot, but if I came back later that deal was off.

Jeff at Valley guns told me NOT to buy the gun he recommended. Instead, he set it aside and told me to do some reading up and talk to some people first and make sure it was what I wanted.

On another note, Full Spectrum Gear will be carrying guns and ammo very shortly.

What kind of shooting/hunting are you planning, Jesse?

I think most guys started out with a .22 rimfire of some sort. Mine was a Mossberg M146B bolt action. My son when he started wanted a semi-auto so I bought him a Marlin M70.

If you want something more powerful than a .22 your choice is endless depending on the size of your wallet! Have a look at what's available, try them out if you can but make sure you get a rifle/shotgun that fits you well.
If you want an "all-round" rifle you can't go wrong with a 6.5x55, a .308 or a .30-06. Or a .270 or any of the other similar cartridges in that power range. They all kill deer/moose/bear.
If you want a shotgun - a 12 gauge pump is a good 1st step.

Think about getting a muzzleloader - they are so much fun!

Ther are a lot of posts on the Forum to read up on other guys' personal favourites.
