Does any restriction exist around Ompah, Ontario?
I would like to bring my rifles next time I go fishing and do some plinking. Any hunters around there to give away some hints for the coming deer season?

I've done it near Vennachar.
Be absolutely sure that there is no way what you are doing could be construed as hunting.
More and More Toronto cottagers are in the area. They will call in gun shots if they hear them. The locals could care less.

is that near highway 41 lol heck i used to hear stories from friends matawatchen about the cops not comming in to the area after dark a few years ago

Should be no problem in Ompah at all.Lots of old gravel pits to do a little shooting.

This link will take you to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources webpage for Crown Lands. Click on the 'Detailed Map Series' tab, then explore to the tile you want, and download the .pdf of your favourite area. Don't sweat the time, it will be over when it is over. The .pdf file will be a big page (35"x29"), but zoom to 100% or more to locate the area you are looking for. The great thing about .pdf's is the compression is loss-less and the detail doesn't pixelate when you scale in and out. [Translation - COOL!]

Call the local MNR, Tell them that you will be shooting in the area. Don't ask for permission, and certainly speak with someone else than the receptionist.... a CO would be best.

If you're stopped by a CO in the bush and you have a firearm, in Ontario, you are assumed to be hunting. No hunting licence or using a firearm chambered in a calibre not suitable for whatever game is in season can get you charged with hunting without a licence and hunting out of season. Having targets with you might, I say again, might avoid this. Having targets likely will avoid it as long as where you are shooting is safe. Crown land is used by all kinds of hikers, picnickers and other riffraff who don't have to pay the Outdoors Card Tax. Be very sure of what is behind whatever backstop you're using.

I would question that part?
I haven't heard of any law stating a .300wm is not suitable for groundhog hunting!
I also not sure, but I don't think groundhogs are covered under a small games licence?
If your in a pit or whatever shooting at some targets, it would be very hard for a CO or OPP to interprit what your doing as anything other than just shooting.
All that said, a little common sense will also go a long way to preventing incidents, like make sure your not right next to a lake full of cottagers!

"...I don't think groundhogs are covered under a small games licence..." Yep. You are required to have a small game licence for ground hogs and anything else that doesn't have a closed season. Coyotes for example.
"....300wm is not suitable..." I don't disagree with you. I've used .30 calibre, 220 grain Silvertips on ground hogs. However, because the .300 Mag isn't normally used for ground hogs/varmints, you can be charged with hunting out of season if you're out and about with one. If you're obviously safely shooting targets, you're usually ok. Wandering around plinking with one, on the other hand, can lead to grief.
"...a little common sense will also go a long way..." Exactly.

i have also heard the locals being refured to as bad as the hatfields and the mcoys nice place though realy and good point about calling the ministry and speaking to a CO

What could be wrong with that? Like good old days when we were free, and proud.
