I'm flying to Edmonton next week for work, and would like to pick up a rifle when in town-anybody have experience, good or bad with Air Canada and guns?
Also it's been so long since I bought anything, I can't remember how much time to allow for paperwork/phone calls to CFC. I won't likely have a lot of spare time.

You should be able to get a TAN referance number PDQ during the week but I hear the CFC is closed on weekends so don't leave it till weekend. Maybe having the store mail it might be a whole lot easier. They get bulk rate and shipping a long gun from ALTA to BC only cost's around $20

Fly all the time from Vancouver to Calgary with guns ( Westjet and Air Canada )

Just let them know you need a "firearms" tag. All ticket agents will know what that is. Never had a problem yet

Only once did they make me unlock the case to inspect that the gun was indeed unloaded ( one of the requirements ).

ammunition cannot be in the same case and the case has to have a lock

Only think I don't like is they tag it as "unloaded firearm" which makes me paranoid that it says to the baggage handlers "steal me"

Only bad experience was Air Canada managed to break a chunk off my pelican case !

Might be easier to have store ship it to your home. Unless you bring an empty gun case from home (with a lock) you will have to buy that in Alta. too. That might care care of your sales tax saving. Russell Sports in Calgary has a good catalog and good prices and would mail gun of your choice to you.

Mail 18-20 bucks. Air canada over length luggage 180bucks. I know, I just did it

 How long a gun did you bring? I just flew from Inuvik to Saskatchewan and back on two different airlines (Canadian North and Air Canada) and was not charged any "oversize" baggage fee. They whacked me because I had a piece that was 80 pounds (max is now 50 as of October 12) but that's fair enough. My rifle case is a Pelican 1750 (pretty much as big as you can buy, length-wise) and they didn't look twice at it.

The Britney at the counter did want me to take the bolt out of it though. :? Not sure why. And what would I do if it was one of my autoloading shotguns or rifles? Nevertheless, I didn't bother arguing (I usually would, because I'm right, and stubborn, but I was running late). They've never asked me for a registration certificate, ATT or any paperwork of the like either.

:?

I have never been charged any extra fee for taking a rifle or a shotgun on any airline including Air Canada. Actually I have travelled on Air Canada more than any other.
