Firearms without ser# or ser# on barrel

From what I understand, when a person goes to register a firearm which doesn't have a ser #, once the firearms has ben verified, it is issued a cert # and a sticker with that cert # is issued to place onto the barrel. I've seen many a Cooey .22lr rifles with such stickers on the barrel. I was given an old unregistered Cooey so I stamped my own serial # on the barrel and registered it using my own s/n, no probs with CFC when verified & registered.

Check with the CFC, someone mentioned in another thread that they aren't even bothering to issue the stickers anymore and the reg cert simply says "no serial #" on it, but the cert does have a registration number.

Yep, I had 2 Cooeys that needed serial numbers, and CFC just sent two stickers. Unfortunately, the adhesive on the stickers doesn't do too well when exposed to gun oils, solvents, water, air, etc. So after having one come off, I just stamped the number from the stickers onto the rifles and threw the stickers away. No problems.

now let me get this straight-the reason we have a gun registry is so they can trace a firearm used to commit an offense-does anybody actually think a criminal is going to leave a sticker on a gun he is going to commit a crime with?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's the action that is registered and not the barrel. I don't think it's a big deal but if you start stamping #'s into your gun I'd put them on the action. Barrels can get swaped out.

I would like to know how many crimes have been solved as a direct result of registering the firearm, that would NOT have been solved without it

so what happens if I am stopped and the sticker has come off my old 22-do I still get charged?Do they re issue stickers?[one of mine is missing]If they did-how do they know if it really isn't missing?Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the whole excercise?

Over the years I have had to ask for a replacement sticker at lest a half a dozen times as one pass of Hoppes and they come off. Also I installed a scope mount on one and it covered the sticker.

They just send out another, no big deal.

Good question about the no sticker situation and being charged...Amnesty perhaps?

so,let me understand this-if you can get a a half a dozen stickers for the same gun-what in the world good does THAT do?-they could be put on 6 diferent guns

What good does any of the registry / licencing BS do? Don't go looking for logic in this, it is all fear, misunderstanding, emotion and social re-engineering at work.
