Well guys, broke my centrefire cherry tonight at the range, fired 50 rounds from a Glock 17. BIG difference to the 22 I've been firing for the past 3 week i must say. A little getting used to but definitely had a great time.

I shot about 1000rds from a 22 pistol and got bored with the caliber. Only centerfire for this guy from now on. 9mm, 40, 357sig and mag, 45, 44mag, the sky is the limit now. Try em' all :D

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the 9 mm. I think every new handgun shooter should skip the 22 and go straight for a 9mm semi or 38 spl revolver. Take the money you save by not buying a 22 and put it all toward centerfire ammo. Now before the flaming starts let me tell you why. If you really truly enjoy shooting handguns you'll end up with at least 9mm or a 40 and most likely something more, like a 45 or 44. Everyone says learn the essentials with a rimfire and the cheap ammo. Well I don't think you learn as much with a 22 as with something larger. You have to learn to shoot with the noise, muzzle flash and recoil of a larger gun and you'll never learn these with a 22.
Sure you'll learn trigger control and sight picture with the 22 but you'll fall asleep from boredom. Look around at how many guys buy their first handgun, a 22, and a month later have a Glock or M+P or Ruger while the 22 gather dust. Maybe they should have skipped the 22.

I can definitly see how this gets expensive at 22$ a box of 50 but this is for range ammo to be used on range guns. At least thats my only vice lol ;)

$22 a box is a little expensive, my range sells S&B for $15 a box of 50

my first centerfire was a 1911 in 9mm and i cant get enough, you will burn through your wallet in no time!

I always take a .22LR to the range. I start shooting the session with the .22 to warm up. It is cheap and helps you get into the grove I think. Once I'm settled down than something else comes out.

I've had my .22s for over 12 years. I still love shooting them. Not uncommom for me to put 300-500 rounds down range. The game in this country is shooting at paper. For me, the thrill is getting as many holes close to the bullseye as possible. The size of the hole doesn't matter. $20 for 500 rounds is hard to beat. I shoot both .22 pistols and revolvers, so every range visit has variety. Don't get me wrong, I love centerfire as well, I just don't need the big boom for fun. If I want the big boom, that can be satisfied with my rifles and shotguns.

I currently have the following guns, just to give you an idea of where this new hobby can take you.

Guns I have acquired over the last 15 years used for hunting

old 20 gage single shot gun
model 12 - 12 gauge pump
870 express magnum 12 gauge
1187 12 gauge
remington 721 30.06

I went to the gun range for the first time JUST THIS PAST SUMMER and now have these new additions,

Ruger SR 22 tactical style rifle
Rugar Mark III .22 pistol
S&W MP9mm pistol
Remington 1911 R1 .45 ACP
Just Right Carbine 9mm Rifle

Since my wife started coming with me, I added these,

Norinco .22 rifle
Beretta U22 Neos .22 pistol

Added a bigger 16 gun safe a few months ago, sold it and replaced it with a 36 gun safe
Picked up 2 progressive reloading presses with all the required supplies and equipment.

So as you can see, this IS a SICKNESS and can drain a lot of your free cash.

All that said, I still usually bring all of my latest purchased guns to the range on every visit and shoot all of them on each visit, especially the .22's

Happy shooting!

Kinda stuck using range ammo right now and range guns as my rpal app will be mailed out as of friday, then the fun begins. Almost certain my first gun will be the m&p 9. Buying my own ammo will def be alot cheaper lol!

thanks for all the great feedback i love this site
