i want to fireform 100 cases to 7 08ai using pistol powder and cow. normaly i would just load up and go to the range but thought this might be quicker and easier on the barrel. i have lots of win 231 and unique. how many grains of which powder to start with. is it quite enough to fire off in the garage firing into a piece of 4 inch pipe?

to load for the garage, been there tried that.
start at 5 grains, if the should moves 100% then your good, if it doesn't completely form them go up 1 grain at a time until you get perfectly formed shoulders. Last AI I did i just shot regular ammo to fireform it, heck another day at the range is a good day

I do it in the basement, shooting at a concrete wall. Best with wife not home....

My wife snivels a bit about such things as well. She doesn't even like me shooting my Webley Tempest or the P08 BB gun at cardboard targets, with a catcher, in the basement. The impacts on the cardboard can be quite loud/annoying.

The real problems/complaints come from my Jack Russell.

OP, I really like the 7-08 and have always been curious about the AI version. From the info I've found, there seems to be little if any real difference between the parent case and the AI case as far as performance is concerned.

I fireform a lot of cases for different rifles, especially antique or a few wildcats.

I find that COW, by itself just doesn't blow out the case enough to fully fireform it, so I use wax plugs about a quarter inch (5mm) thick, in the case neck, with about 5 grains of HS6 with a bit of saran wrap over it, then topped up to the neck with COW.

It's just enough to fully fireform the case and the wax/cow residue just brushes out easily.

Funny story about fire forming with cow and wax plugs, Back in my younger years I took some 7mmSTE for my Win 94 to the range to form the cases. I was poping them off as fast as I could single load them and a Fudd 10 benches over comes over and starts to come down on me for not hitting my target and I need to slow down and concentrate on my shot more. At that point I showed him what I was doing and that there was no projectile. He resonded by saying he was taking my badge number and reporting me to the executive!

I have versions of both. The AI is certainly faster, but in my case the numbers are somewhat skewed by the fact that my regular 7-08 has a slow barrel. In the last 700 version I had with a 22" barrel, same as the AI version, there was about 80-100 fps, depending on the load. - dan

I don't use wax plugs but I do use ordinary carpenters glue. 8-10 gr of Unique and then fill the case to the base of the neck with COW then fill neck with glue, let set until dry and use...this produces a pressure builder and also holds the cow in the case during the handling/loading process....oh ya...point the thing somewhere safe, those glue slugs raise hell with brand new deck railing....

If you are going to use cow to fire form, don't forget to not stand behind the cow.
If you forget the flaming bovine scat can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
