fireforming 24ga brass to .577 Snider

Max is 2” but some rifles won’t chamber that length. I usually trim to 1.950” which chambers in any snider I tried. One I have will not chamber 2.003” cases. I assume you are going to cut to length and fireform with shot since the last two worked well.

Some speculated the charge was too light and or the brass too long to fire form properly. I have some .592 conicals so may go with 70gr and see what the brass measures after shortening.

Sizing die can be backed off for a partial sizing. Lee dies do work well. I have a set C-H made for Herters press, different thread than most. If you where closer I could help you out. I assume you have the 24 ga Magtec brass which what I have used. The front part of the case is the issue as it’s too big. Your going to have to find someone close to to resize the rest of your cases or break down and buy a die set. These are larger size dies so you would need a press that handles them. I have the Lee with a bushing that is removed.
Fire forming the two cases you have is easy. 70 grs of 2f and use cork wads to fill the rest of the case. Drop the bullet in the chamber, push it in with the case.
If your going to play with these old guns you should have your gear as it is a pain relying on someone else for sizing and bullets. I have 3 moulds I have tried Lee minnie’s and Accurate mould. The accurate bullets I am still testing, showing good results so far. It’s a 500 gr 0.595 solid base bullet.

Thanks for that. I have Magtec brass done up by X-Ring and have the same problem of too small of a case mouth for my fireforming projectiles. I’ll certainly try that.

Buy yourself a .60 X-Ring mold from Martyn. That is a very good projectile which I use. My magtech cases inside measure about .610 so I'm not sure yours fire formed enough. That just might be the size of your chamber though. Your other choice is a Lyman 575-213 paper patched to be a good fit in the brass. I used to do this but got tired of patching the bullets, so bought the .60 mold.

The .592" are a tight "fit" no way a .600 will fit unless a warmer fireform load expands the neck a little more.I'll fire a couple of those and remeasure.

592 may work well. Black powder has a habit of slugging bullets up to fit the bore. My 0.595 is working very well. Shooting this old stuff is a lot of trial and error. What works in one gun may not work in another. My 24 ga brass fire form first shot. My heavier 577 3” brass took two firings before it was fully expanded. 24 ga brass is a lot thinner.

Cut two cases to 1.905" and now they should hold a .600 ball. LEE mold on the way with a shellholder for priming in my Rockchucker.

What are you using for filler between the powder and ball? Cornmeal can hypothetically ring the chamber some use window rod foam insulation. Do you use anything under the ball?

get the right dies and no fire forming needed. trim, aneeal, size, load

i have a lee mould that throws .595 bullets. pan lube, load

You never know when another rebelion will be needed....better to have more "shootables" than the other guy.

you are exactly right hahaha. i used to do them just for me, then a few friends wanted some, and then it took off i think ive done around 1500 cases out of magtech brass. it works great, lasts forever. i even built a lil power trimmer with a diamond blade doesnt take long to do a box full

Problem with dies is ,which brand do you buy? C+H didn't size the 24 ga enough ,Lee sizes too much. RCBS worked but is stupid expensive. I may get a hobbiest machinist make me a sizing die.

I have a small lathe I use. Once set its just keep repeating until done. I think I am over 200 cases. I occasionally sell a few. I sell more bullets than cases.
