Fireforming brass, Need a how to guide

I have never fire formed brass other, than firing full strength loads. However, I have a 6.5x58 Port that I am making brass for out of 8mm Mauser. It was recommended to fire form the brass after I full length resize them to the 6.5x58 dimensions.

What I need is a how to guide. I have no idea on this, though someone suggested Paraffin wax to seal the top. Any ideas as far as powder (type and amount) and how to do it. The performance of this round is similar to 6.5x55 Swede but not interchangeable as far as case dimensions. Similar powder charges though.

Any help would be appreciated including links to other how to sites.

THanks

i fire formed some brass but it was bigger than what you are doing
so powder levels might be diffrent
I used 15 grns of blue dot
then filled with cream of wheat and plugged the end with klenex
I would think that the wax idea would really suck when the time came to clean the barrel

I size my brass down in a couple steps and then use 13-15 grains Red Dot, I have used cream of wheat for a filler and a piece of dacron to hold it all in the case, that was for 25.06 and 25.03.

Perfect cases every time, I would Not used a reduced load, as the old books to say to use a standard load. My 25.06 cases are made from either 270 or 30.06 and need trimming after sizing before fforming. Hopes this helps. Johnny G1

I have a Port M1904 and have shot it. All these ideas work. You can do it in your basement or garage (except for the one with a bullet!).

I used 30/06 brass (needs to be trimmed, but ends up the right length), but 8x57 works well, just has a short neck. 7x57 might be better to try (avoid thick neck syndrome). I used 10 grs of Unique under Cream of Wheat, under firmly packed tissue. I'd anneal after sizing and before fireforming.

but why is fire forming done without a bullet?
for a couple reasons
if you are makeing an ackley the point of impact will be very diffrent from the parent case so you will have to sight your rifle in twice
less wear on your barrel with just a little fire and no bullet
whats the point of makeing a unique casing if your just going to shoot regular bullets anyway

Any primer, 10-12 grains of Unique or Bullseye, fill with Cream of Wheat, seal top with wad of tissue and fire away! Cases will be close to perfect, and you can load a regular load and shoot away afterwards. I do all my Ackley improved cases this way, saves bullets and wear on throat. Regards, Eagleye.

I do the 700x and cream of wheat thing, the guy that taught me used crisco to plug, I used some old muzzleloader bullet lube, clean up is not that bad.

One other thing the guy taught me was to lube the outside of the case lightly to ensure that the case pushes right back against the bolt face so you get the best possible case form.

Hi

The operative word there is *lightly*. Anything that builds up in the chamber is going to mess you up.

Cream of wheat, pistol/shotgun powder, and a plugged neck work well, but (trust me on this) are a little loud in the basement. Kind of freaks the wife and the dogs out. Whoops. - dan

Hi

Kinda makes for some smoke in the basement. Open the windows to air things out and you bother the neighbors. Next thing you know you are explaining the details of fire forming to officer friendly. Don't ask me how I know this ....

Hi

Now that I think about it, the local indoor range was none to pleased when the topic of spraying the place with Cream of Wheat and / or Crisco came up....

well, today i too tried 700x and cream of wheat to turn .308 Norma Mag brass into .358 Norma Mag. pleased with the results except my house now reeks of burnt cream of wheat. do i still have to size the brass before loading?

Just remember that all that information given here, was for the most part, not from any book! The fellows experimented, until they found something satisfactory for their purpose.
