Firing .308 in 7.62x54R

Many Many Moons Ago

I did fire some 7.62 Nato BLANKS in an M44 carbine.
It did fire just fine.........
Rather loud, ahemm but it works.

Which is why no one in their right mind should think of using use REAL 7.62 nato or 308 rounds in a 7.62x54R chamber, because it WILL fire.

Not quite. The bullet diameters essentially are the same, unlike the 8mm vs 30-06 where there is 15 thou larger bullet and more than an eighth of an inch headspace! :eek:

The real problem in the scenario being discussed would be the unsupported case head, if you could get it to go off.

Having said that, has anyone here ever tried to chamber an 8X57 Mauser in a 30-06. I have and have been unable to do so. The bullet always jams up in the neck before the boly even begins to close. Anyone who continues beyond that point without checking to see what is wrong, is a candidate for the Darwin Awards.

the length of the .308Win shell is 51mm, the shell of 7.62x54R is 54mm....
the same idea to shot .22LR in the .22Mag chamber :).....

Problem is, the .22 WMR has a significantly larger case diameter.
When you fire a case the walls stretch to the chamber dimensions.
Now do you see the problem?
And that's if you can get it to fire at all.
Since both are rimfires it's likely that the firing pin for a .22 WMR wouldn't actually be able to hit the rim or a .22LR cartridge.
