can you fire a 45 colt out of a 410 shotgun?

I read somewhere that its ok to do but I'd like to get some input from real people.....dont want my new gun to blow up in my face.

as a note I purchased the last (or so the shop seller was telling me) Springfield M6 survival gun in Canada the other day cant wait to get it

410 is .410 diameter bore .45 is.452 usually thats a .042 difference AND no one tries to load and fire .45 bullets in .41 magnums which has the same size difference but a much stronger gun. But IT IS POSSIBLE they made the M6 with a .45 bore. I did a www.dogpile.com search of " SPRINGFIELD M6" and there is lots of articles and info there. It seems they made a M6 in .22 /.45 that also shoots .410 but it appears they didn't make a .410 that shoots .45, it would be marked on the barrel as to what it can shoot.

I would NEVER shoot ammunition out of a barrel it wasn't intended for.

There are reasons why manufacturers specifically mark their barrels with the caliber of ammunition designated for a given barrel. Your intent is one of those reasons.

Check American Derringer Site Eh

As above, check the American Derringer site. When I spent a year in Texas USA in 1988-89 I noticed that one of the most popular carry guns were Derringers that used 45 Colt and 410. Not sure IF it was interchangeable.
Used primarily for shooting rattlesnakes very near your feet. .410 shot charge at 6 feet ensures a hit as rattlesnakes dont sit still when confronted eh!

45 colt

I found some info on dogpile.com (very usefull search tool) it seems the 18inch barrel M6 scout that I have will not shoot 45 long colt maybe because of the choke of the barrel. A pistol versions of the M6 Scout Survival Rifle from Springfield, Inc., with 10-inch barrels in .22 LR and .22 Hornet, or a .45 Colt/.410-- bore with a folding shoulder stock. We likely will never see this gun in Canada of if we do it would require an ATT (not practical)

Put it this way. A .410 works at pressures around 11,000 PSI a Colt 45 at pressures around 35,000+ PSI. Do the math. Reguardsless if it fit or not you'd be shooting ammo that was working at 3 times the pressure the action/barrel of the gun were designed to worked. Not what I'd call a safe thing to do. I do believe thought that NEF has come out with a single shot that WAS DESIGNED to shoot both ammo you mention if you really want to be able to do that.

410

Chamber pressure is a big deal and NEF's 410/ 45 colt rifle is designed for this ...so is the derringer pistol (love to have one). I wouldn't have tried to fire a 45 colt out of a 410 shotgun barrel...a person might get away with it....just not worth it though.
Thanks for all your constructive replies and advise.

Big JD-From the hills said:
most 45colt data is around 14000psi max... except ruger and tc data... wich is much higer if you want to push it.
I stand corrected....... The psi I listed was for the .41 Rem which was in the same topic a while back. I just saw something about shooting pistol ammo out of the .410 and it came into my head. 14,000+psi is still quite a bit over the safe max for a .410 and I still wouldnt want someone to do it will I was standing beside them.

I have tried 44 sp out one of my old 22/410s and surprisingly accurate up to 30 yards or so. One thing you must have a tight shotgun, mod, or ic choke and one with a heavier barrel. But honestly if you go to the trouble, might aswell just keep acouple of slugs around they ya wouldnt have to worry about it much.

only, reason iwant to be able to shoot 45 colt is because the 410 slug is as usless as throwing rocks 85 gr.s at 1700fp compared to 255 gr. at around 1000fps
